For Rachel Lapidus

For Rachel Lapidus On July 27th, 2011 Rachel went into Cardiac Arrest. We were told Rachel would never walk or talk again. Look at her now! This all changed on July 27th 2011.

Rachel was a perfectly healthy 19 year old girl. She had graduated high school and was in college full time plus working a full time job. She had a boyfriend and drove a nice little yellow convertible. Rachel has always been a loving person growing up. Especially to her little brother who she always had an awesome bond with. She loves people, she loves animals, and would go out of her way to try t

o help who ever and where ever she could. Rachel had dreams of being a Special Education teacher and all this was taken away one July night. While in the middle of a heated argument with her cousin Rachel all of a sudden stiffened up and dropped. her heart just stopped. We performed CPR within 4 minutes of the incident but Rachel's heart did not start up for almost 9 minutes. Because of this Rachel is suffering from an Anoxic Brain Injury (Lack of Oxygen). When this first happened we were told there was no chance for quality of life because she was down too long. As parents, you would not want to hear something like that about your child. So we fought for her survival with her. We pushed for rehab and after almost a week of arguing with the doctors and Insurance companies finally, Rachel was moved to Rehab Hospitals of Indiana. This approval from the Insurance company was for 3 days. 72 days later Rachel walked out of that rehab and her recovery still continues today. Rachel is a miracle and continues to amaze the doctors who we are all trying to prove wrong. Rachel now has an amazing opportunity ahead of her. Rachel qualifies for HBOT Therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. After the phone consult we were told that RACHEL IS TREATABLE! Her cognitive problems, speech problems, even some of the physical problems are all treatable with HBOT

As parents, after what we have been through to hear those words and would again do ANYTHING we can to make this happen so we are asking for you to help be the miracle for Rachel Lapidus. She spent 10 days on full life support and 72 days in intensive inpatient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis. She now faces years of outpatient rehab to regain basic self-care skills. Rachel's parents, Randy and Robin Lapidus, have been working very hard with Rachel and their efforts are paying off. Even though Rachel has a long way to go, her recovery so far has been miraculous. Help support the Lapidus family in their time of need. You can donate by going to www.gofundme.com/MiracleForRachel

Another fun day in Rachel's books.
She had a great time at the Farmers Market and lived visiting with everyone. She has become very confident in herself and loves to wonder the market, petting as many dogs as possible, visiting with friends, and of course making sure to grab a Lemonade from Lemonade Bros.

This afternoon she had just as much fun on the truck while we ran a route. She got to play with a miniature dachshund, and a pug mix (we both forgot what the mix was). She also got to see friends we haven't seen in a while since Randy usually runs the Saturday afternoon route.

Rachel is all settled in bed, looking forward to going to BND Farm Sanctuary tomorrow with the ice cream truck for Waffles the pigs birthday.

Just a quick note tonight...

Rachel had a fun day as usual at REACH. She did say she had a run in with another participant but the staff quickly took care of it.
This evening Rachel had a good time on the ice cream truck. She chatted with some regulars and got to meet a couple new puppies along the way.
After the route we had to run to walmart for dog food. As we walked in the store Rachel heard several young kids screaming and crying and she said "Let's be fast, I'm done peopling tonight." We did stop and chat with an old friend we haven't seen in a while. Rachel chatted away just like she had seen him yesterday though.

Tomorrow is the Farmers Market and Rachel is looking forward to seeing lots of friends.

Rachel had a pretty quiet day. She helped with the animals this morning, making sure they were all fed and had plenty of water. She always checks the fish tank to make sure all 3 fish are still swimming and announces, "No floaters!"

This evening we had a fun time on thebice cream truck. We got the route done a little early so we made a stop at Fire Station #1 so they could have ice cream. Rachel was very surprised when she saw her favorite EMT Brian Bailey come out. Brian is the emt that worked on Rachel when she had her cardiac arrest. He holds a special place in our hearts and Rachel tells everyone about him.
We enjoyed chatting with the whole crew while they enjoyed their ice cream.
After we got the truck cleaned up and had supper Rachel was ready for bed. She said she was tired but here it is almost 11 and she is still talking. I'm assuming she will be a little slow getting up in the morning.

Ra hel was slow getting up this morning and said she was still tired from the zoo. She did get moving and had plenty of time to get ready for REACH.

When I went to pick Rachel up she was pretty giggly, which meant she was getting tired. She said they had a good day, and went to check put a new shop, but it isn't open yet, so they went to one of the thrift stores instead. Im sure they will get to Hidden Treasures Finders Keepers soon though.

Rachel relaxed this evening and called it a night shortly after supper. Hopefully she gets a good night's sleep and is ready for a fun day tomorrow afternoon on our route.

Rachel was up early ready to go to the zoo. She only mentioned the bus once before I dropped her off this morning.
She said she had a really fun day with her friends and loved the whole trip. She told me all about seeing a baby gibbon and the giraffes. She also told me after she finished her lunch she went to see the tortoises. She said I have to ask Gwen about that one in the morning.
Rachel was happy to tell me that she walked the whole zoo and only sat down at lunch. Everyone was proud of her as that's a big improvement from last years.zoo trip.
Rachel was exhausted when she got home and spent the evening relaxing and called it a night shortly after supper.
Hopefully she's well rested in the morning and is ready for another fun day at REACH.

Rachel wasn't in any hurry to get up this morning. I think she finally got up a little before 10. She was ready to get the day started though.
We had decided last night that we would run our route early this afternoon which Rachel was happy about because she was looking forward to a cookout for supper.

Rachel has to be at REACH a little earlier tomorrow so after supper she got her shower, layer out her clothes, and made sure her purse way where she won't forget it in the morning.
We did have a little bit of worrying about getting on the bus but thankfully Randy was able to get her mind off it, and ease her fear so she could get to sleep. I know she will be up early because she is so excited about the zoo trip.

Rachel was ready for brunch when she got up. We all got ready and headed to Jill's forgetting they were closed. We decided on Grillerz and Rachel was fine with that. She did a good job picking out her own meal, but when it was time to order I ordered for her. Brunch was enjoyable, and Rachel got to catch up with Neil since he joined us today. Of course she told him about her new bracelet, and her future trip to the zoo.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing at home. Rachel worked on some crafts before calling it a night. She's ready to get the route done early tomorrow, so we can celebrate the holiday tomorrow

Rachel was ready for a fun morning at the Farmers Market this morning, even though it qas a little cool out.
We enjoyed the Market, and Rachel had fun visiting with friends, petting dogs, and people watching.
This evening we enjoyed dinner with our framily Neisha, Will, Jr, Jacob, and little Will. Rachel had a blast entertaining little Will before our meals came, and after we ate while we all chatted, and laughed around the table. When we headed home Rachel was already asking when we would go out with them again because it was so fun.
Before Rachel went to bed she got her giraffe tracker on her tablet. She is tracking a female giraffe in Kenya. We will read more about her tomorrow and I'm sure Rachel will be sharing about her at REACH next week.

Although it was a rainy day, and the outing was canceled for today, Rachel still had a good day at REACH.
They turned today into Fun Friday. They too a little trip out to the outlet mall and Rachel found a really cool puzzle. It looks a little challenging because it has no flat edges, but I think she's up for the challenge.
We may have to work on it Sunday and see how it goes.

This evening Rachel and I hung out at home while Randy handles the ice cream truck at the Salute concert. We played a couple games, watched a movie, and finished up some laundry. Rachel told me since she put the laundry in the washer and dryer I could fold it. I then told her she can put it away and she told me she will just use her basket like a drawer.

Rachel wentbto bed hoping the rain ends tonight and we have a busy farmers market tomorrow.
