We’re so excited to announce the award recipient of the Nate Goldberg Hope for Healing Award!

Terry Russell recently retired as the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio (NAMI Ohio). Mr. Russell assumed the position of Executive Director of NAMI Ohio on July 1, 1998 after serving 22 years as the President/CEO of the Clark, Green and Madison Counties Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board, the largest multi-county community mental health system in the state of Ohio.

In June of 1998, Mr. Russell retired from the public system. He assumed the Executive Director’s position with NAMI Ohio because of his deep commitment to those suffering with major brain disorders. During his tenure, NAMI Ohio became one of the largest state affiliates in the country. Through his leadership, NAMI Ohio did become “the State’s Voice on Mental Illness”. Terry has traveled the State of Ohio advocating for better care for those living with mental illness and their families. He is a recognized advocate at the Statehouse as well as in Washington DC.

In 2002, Mr. Russell received recognition as The National Mental Health Advocate of the Year at the Reintegration Ceremonies held in New York City. Mr. Russell received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Ohio’s largest foundation working to enhance the care of those suffering from mental illness. In 2016, Mr. Russell was inducted into the Ohio State School of Social Work Hall of Fame. Most recently, Governor Mike DeWine recognized Mr. Russell for his 50 years of leadership in Ohio’s mental health system during his State of the State Address.

As a family member with a sibling afflicted with schizophrenia, Mr. Russell viewed his role as more of a mission than an avocation.

We are pleased to announce that Franklin County Board of Commissioners President Erica C. Crawley will be our Guest Speaker at Day For Hope on September 19, 2022!

Commissioner Erica C. Crawley is a mother, advocate, and a veteran. She is the first Franklin County Black woman Commissioner and is a U.S. Navy Veteran. She is also a proud first-generation college graduate, holds a J.D. from Capital University Law School and M.P.A. from Walden University.

Before her service as a Franklin County Commissioner, Crawley served in the Ohio House of Representatives representing the 26th District. There, she worked on maternal health, infant mortality, birth to five initiatives, housing and food insecurity, and veterans’ issues. She also served as the Ranking Member on the House Finance Committee, among other legislative committees. She was previously appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Infant Mortality, the Commission on Minority Health, the State Controlling Board, the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board, and is a founding member of Ohio’s Black Maternal Health Caucus.

Prior to her service in elected office, Commissioner Crawley worked on behalf of children and families as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children (CASA), and in positions with the YWCA Head Start/Early Start Program and the Black Child Development Institute.

💚 Nancy Cunningham, PsyD, Vice President at the Center for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cunningham works with external community providers and organizations to develop partnerships that result in improved access to care and integration of services on behalf of children and their families.
💚 Rick Milenthal, Founder, Chairman and CEO of The Shipyard. The Shipyard has made mental health their core cause, providing communications support for many of The Ohio State University’s most important mental illness and su***de prevention programs. Using the mantra “Communication Can Cure”, The Shipyard is committed to building safe, nurturing communities that speak openly about sharing struggles and adversity.
