NEW DEVELOPMENT 🌍

We’re preparing to head back into the mission field, and this one marks a significant milestone. With 52 cleft surgeries planned, it will be the highest volume of cleft cases we’ve ever taken on in one week.

But this mission is about more than surgery alone.
For the first time, we are expanding our care model by adding a team of internal medicine physicians who will diagnose, treat, and manage complex, chronic, and acute health conditions for family members during the week. Alongside them, a pediatrician will begin working with the local medical team to provide preventive care, vaccinations, and treatment for illnesses, injuries, and chronic conditions affecting both our cleft patients and their families.

How does something like this come together? It happens because of generous individuals and organizations who step in, reach out, and walk alongside us, helping us grow our impact in meaningful ways.

We know we can’t solve every challenge these children and families face. But providing life-changing surgeries, along with access to education and consistent medical care, is a powerful step forward, and it’s something that continues to grow.

Looking ahead, we’re also preparing to launch a dental team this November. It’s a new step, and while it adds complexity, we believe deeply that these children are more than worth it.

NEW LAUNCH 🚀

We are excited to announce another NEW site 🙌🏻
This November, and our team of volunteers will begin providing free dental care to cleft patients and their families in Antigua, Guatemala.

Beyond her leadership, Dr. Miller and team (Dentistry of Dublin) participated in our February campaign. All proceeds go to support our international dental mission efforts, including this new site.

Her commitment is a powerful reminder that no act of kindness is ever wasted. We truly believe that access to dental care can transform lives. We are committed to improving not just smiles, but overall health and well-being.

Listen to this 👇

Last week our team performed 71 surgeries, 189 audiologic evaluations, 8 nasal endoscopies, and 5 sleep apnea evaluations — caring for a total of 273 children.

This level of comprehensive care simply would not be possible without extraordinary partners.

A special thank you to
Coordinating travel to and from Antigua for all 273 children — along with arranging travel and housing for our entire Oklahoma City team — was an enormous and unprecedented effort. The logistics alone were remarkable.

To care for this many children in one week requires more than surgeons and nurses. It requires vision, leadership, and partners willing to do the hard work behind the scenes.

Because of this team effort, 273 children now have more than procedures — they have new opportunities to speak clearly, hear fully, sleep safely, and smile with confidence.

After returning we’re still overwhelmed, grateful and humbled knowing what was accomplished will last far beyond last week.

Behind every successful surgery is an incredible recovery team.

A huge thank you to Rylee Pope and Karalyn Henderson, our PACU nurses on this trip. While the surgeries happen in the operating room, healing continues in recovery — and we simply could not do this work without skilled nurses caring for these children afterward.

During our trip, we performed an incredible 71 surgeries, and every single one required attentive, compassionate postoperative care.

Rylee and Karalyn, thank you for your long hours, steady hands, and the kindness you show our patients and their families.

This mission runs because of team members like you.

On mission trips, the surgeons often get the credit — but none of this happens without an incredible team behind the scenes.

Allison Stewart and Bobbie Harbin, surgical assistants from OKC, have been absolutely amazing this week. Their skill, focus, and tireless work make every single surgery possible.

In just three days, we’ve performed 45 surgeries — and that simply doesn’t happen without experienced assistants who keep everything moving smoothly and safely.

We are so grateful for teammates like Allison and Bobbie. These missions are never about one person — they’re about a team committed to changing lives together.

Dr. doesn’t just operate…sometimes she’s a race car driver.

One of our little patients cruised to the OR today in style, chauffeured by Dr. Woodson. Because before we repair a cleft lip or palate, we make sure our kids feel safe — and maybe even have a little fun.

Surgery changes lives.
But kindness makes it possible.

EMPOWERING ✨

An important element of our mission work isn’t just the surgeries we perform — it’s the surgeons we train.

We believe the greatest impact comes from what continues after we leave.

Dr. Freddy and three other local surgeons we have helped train performed over 140 cleft palate surgeries last year. That kind of local leadership is what truly changes a system.

Today, is training Dr. Freddy to perform VPI (velopharyngeal insufficiency) surgery — a critical procedure that helps children develop normal speech.

This training will enable these local surgeons to start providing VPI surgeries independently from our teams.
This is goal: sustainable care, lasting impact, and empowering local surgeons to transform their own communities.

👂✨

This week during Free to Smile’s cleft mission trip to Guatemala, we’re doing something different.

Most people know children with cleft lip and palate need surgery to repair their lip and palate. What many don’t realize is that about 50–60% of children with cleft palate also have hearing loss.

Because the palate muscles help open the Eustachian tube, fluid often builds up behind the eardrum and blocks sound. Some children develop repeated infections that damage the eardrum or middle ear bones.

When a child cannot hear clearly, normal speech development becomes very difficult.

Most cleft organizations focus on repairing lips and palates which is life-changing- but our goal is comprehensive cleft care.

For the first time we are now performing hearing restoration surgeries in addition to cleft repair.

The team of Free to Smile volunteers from Oklahoma City fundraised, purchased and personally traveled with this piece of equipment from the U.S. to bring this new microscope to .

It will allow our teams to treat chronic ear disease and restore hearing for children who would otherwise continue to struggle — even after their cleft is repaired.

Repairing a lip changes a smile.
Restoring hearing changes a child’s future

Passion-Heart-Commitment

From a picnic table to a portable dental unit… from the mountains of Tibet to a children’s home in Guatemala — legacy of service continues.

For nearly 20 years she has served as a board member, financially supported, and volunteered her time — impacting thousands of children along the way.

And she’s not done yet. This November, she will help launch a brand-new dental site, expanding care to even more kids in need.

Thank you, Dr. Miller, for supporting our campaign and for reminding us that ONE person truly can make a difference. ✨
