5 initial takes from DSA's 2021 Convention
1. SOCIALIST REFORMIST PLATFORM ADOPTED
Big step forward. Need for a rupture with capitalism unfortunately not included.
2. DEMOCRACY IN DSA STRENGTHENED
Convention corrected undemocratic election of delegates in Portland & overturned NPC’s removal of candidates facing allegations. Unfortunately other proposals failed, like electing the National Director.
3. SHIFT TO THE RIGHT ON INTERNATIONAL POLICIES
Good: overwhelming consensus to boldly oppose US imperialism. Bad: shift toward uncritically supporting mass reformist parties and undemocratic “anti-imperialist” governments especially in Latin America.
4. ELECTORAL STRATEGY
Good: Bolder commitment to turning DSA into a party-like organization. Bad: Stepped back from the 2019 “Dirty Break” position.
5. NEW NPC: GIVE A FIGHTING LEAD!
Potential left majority around B&R, Matt M, Emerge, the GND slate & others on NPC. The NPC should give a bold lead toward an independent working class, eco-socialist, campaigning organization!

Sign-on: DSA Platform Amendments Promoting Rupture with Capitalism and Working Class Democracy

We need to collect 250 signatures from DSA members by July 15 to bring the following DSA Platform amendments to the floor of the DSA National Convention.

In our view, these amendments are needed to overcome some of the weaknesses of the much-improved second draft of the DSA Platform. Our amendments concern:

1) The need for a democratic, socialist rupture with capitalism

2) While fighting for every possible democratic reform within the existing US government, our horizon is for a new, socialist, democratic system based on institutions of popular power

3) The importance of democracy and transparency in working class movements and organizations

Here is the list of demands from the family of Casey Goodson Jr, a 23 year old Black man who was recently murdered by a Franklin Co Deputy Sheriff. Let’s please be sure we are uplifting their fight for justice and that we show up as a community to call for these demands.

Please send money to his family to fund his memorial and their fight for justice. The central ohio community is all too familiar with how costly is it to fight against state sanctioned violence. Let’s pull up!!

An important contribution to the question presented by a historically unpopular presidential line up by the Seattle Reform and Revolution comrades:

Why DSA Should Oppose Biden and Recommend a Vote for Hawkins in Safe States

“What should DSA members say when we’re asked who we're supporting by co-workers, friends, family, at BLM protests, or when campaigning for socialist candidates in down-ballot races?
.. We think DSA can deal with this difficult election most effectively if we, as a collective organization, take some time to consciously discuss it, rather than leaving it to members to figure out in isolation. We believe this is a modest but important use of DSA’s resources.

Furthermore, DSA’s silence on how to vote doesn’t take place in a vacuum. The most prominent representatives of the left publicly associated with DSA — Bernie Sanders and AOC — are campaigning for Biden. If DSA maintains its non-endorsement policy, it will contribute, in practice, to many DSA members voting for Biden in safe states, or not voting at all.”
