In honor of Military Appreciation Month, our own Leora Porter, Community Housing Coordinator at Sara J. Harper Village in Cleveland, shares how serving veterans is much more than "just a job."

"God didn’t just place me in a job — He placed me in a room full of veterans whose strength inspires me daily. Every day I’m reminded that serving those who served is not just work; it’s a calling." - Leora Porter

Every day, we work to restore dignity for the most underserved populations in our communities. That love and respect for our neighbors does not end at death.

Our own VP of Operations & Logistics, Lawrence Hendrix, is the keeper of any odd things donated to our VOA Thrift locations across Ohio.
Sometimes those items are cremated remains.

Just as he did for a woman named Dolores Ford last year, Lawrence cared for the cremains of a man named Ernst. Last week, he traveled to Indianapolis to give Ernst a proper, final resting place.

Lawrence connected with He Knows Your Name Ministry and the Marion County Coroner's Office for their annual funeral and service to lay to rest unclaimed persons.

There were prayers, eulogies, songs, doves, and the reading of names.
Even though we do not know who Ernst was in this world, he was a person of worth, and we want to remember and celebrate his life.
