Columbia Public Schools' Planetarium

Columbia Public Schools' Planetarium Columbia Public Schools Planetarium at Rock Bridge High School Public shows are available the 2nd Saturday of each month. It’s a virtual Universe.

The Columbia Public Schools Planetarium, located at Rock Bridge High School, has inspired countless children since its opening in 1974. The planetarium services Columbia Public School groups as well as school districts around mid-Missouri. Check out our website: http://cpsplanetarium.org for more information. The CPS Planetarium is not an IMAX theater, an astronomical observatory, or a scientific

laboratory. It brings the stars to your fingertips, letting you stare deep into the night sky on the cloudiest of nights or the middle of the day. It lets you zoom through the Galaxy on a virtual spaceship. You can even be transported, within seconds, to the southern hemisphere and view the stars from anywhere on Earth as they were at any point in time.

The weather seems to be holding for this evening's event at the NATURE SCHOOL (8989 South Tom Bass Rd.). We'll start with the Sun and a large sunspot group and then move on to the Moon and Jupiter. Should be a very fine evening! The BULLETIN here is from yesterday evening. We'll actually be set up by about 6:30 pm.

Missing Milky Way

The Milky Way is not clearly visible from the mid latitudes in the northern hemisphere on May evenings, disappointing curious stargazers. This intriguing and glowing band can be found in the east after midnight.

Weather is looking promising for Friday evening's observing event! Fingers crossed the forecast stays promising! 🌕

Eclipse very early Friday morning between 1:30am-2:30am!

Who has their alarms set? 🌕🔴

Tonight's LUNAR ECLIPSE (March 13-14) begins in very late evening and runs on into the early AM Friday. Step outside just after midnight and bring a binocular -- for a first-glimpse of the first "bite" out of the Moon! Old Luna will be high in the south for this event and if the clouds hold off it will be an amazing view. Photo here was taken over near the Memorial Union in 2007, also early in the morning, with a 400mm telephoto lens. Note the difference in shading of the Moon's colors, caused by the Moon not passing through the center of the Earth's shadow. This effect will be in play tonight as well.

Clouded out for tonight’s observing event at the Nature School :(

Trying again on Saturday April 5th for a STEM event & observing night!

Clouds and Wind have forced the CANCELLATION of THIS EVENING'S event, March 7th, at the NATURE SCHOOL OBSERVATORY. We will be back at the Nature School on April 5th for our annual STEM event, both in the morning and then in the evening. More soon on these two sessions! Once again, NO VIEWING tonight, sad to say.
