Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt's final stop at the Missouri Quilt Museum yesterday! The Missouri Bicentennial Quilt will be on long-term exhibition at the Missouri Quilt Museum, along with the Missouri 4-H Bicentennial Quilt and a rotation of county quilts from around the state.

The Missouri Bicentennial Quilt features a block from each of Missouri’s 114 counties and the independent city of St. Louis showcasing the diversity of Missouri’s culture, people and geography. To honor Missouri’s 200 years of statehood, the State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO), Quilting Deals - Missouri Star Quilt Co and the Missouri State Quilters Guild teamed up to find quilters for each quilt block. Quilters from across the state submitted 6.5 x 6.5-inch blocks to represent the county where the live or have a connection. The Missouri Star Quilt Company stitched the blocks together and gave the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt its final look.

The Missouri 4-H Bicentennial Quilt celebrates the rich history of Missouri 4-H. Created by hands of 4-H members, volunteers and supporters, each block represents 4-H and different parts of Missouri. The quilt top was pieced together by past Missouri 4-H Director and avid quilt maker Ina Linville. The quilt has toured with the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt with display stops, including the Missouri State Fair.

Thanks to those who shared the Bicentennial mini quilt post and to our drawing winner, Cindy Collins!

It’s been a busy week finishing up some of our projects for the bicentennial. This afternoon, we dedicated the completed restoration of the Historic Main Gate at the Missouri State Fair off of 16th St. in Sedalia. The Art Deco structure built in the 1930s was restored to its full glory with funding provided by the Missouri Bicentennial Commission. Visitors who pass through these gates will experience the legacy of our state’s agriculture industry and be welcomed by this iconic and historic entrance to the Missouri State Fair Missouri Department of Agriculture

Missouri 2021

August 10, 2021, will mark the two hundredth anniversary of Missouri’s entry as the 24th state to enter the United States. A state with many different regional cultures, geographies, and industries, each Missouri community, county, and region has a story to tell about its people, their history, their commerce, and their culture. By celebrating the accomplishments and diversity of all these regions, we help create a better understanding of our one Missouri and the ties that bind us together.

The 97th Missouri General Assembly, during its First Regular Session in 2013, issued House Concurrent Resolution 7 (HCR7). It tasked the State Historical Society of Missouri with developing “plans, ideas, and proposals to commemorate and celebrate” the Missouri Bicentennial and providing “guidance and direction to a statewide effort to promote and celebrate the State of Missouri’s rich and complex history.”

Under the Missouri 2021 banner, the State Historical Society of Missouri is committed to coordinating a truly statewide commemoration that incorporates both rural and urban communities in projects, programs, and events that contribute to a better shared understanding of the State’s geographic and cultural diversity as well as the similarities that bring us together as Missourians.
