Grassroots was profiled on the public television program All Access with Andy Garcia! The feature looks at the prevalence of mental health and su***de risks among our youth and how Grassroots is working to provide support to those who are most in need as one of the most comprehensive programs available to individuals and families seeking help.

You can watch the whole segment here: https://bit.ly/GRAllAccess

Grassroots Executive Director Dr. Mariana Izraelson is highlighted and talks about how 40% of high school students report feeling hopelessness and sadness. There is hope through programs like Grassroots which offer free, 24-hour crisis, mental health, substance use and su***de prevention services. In addition, our partner Mark Luckner, Executive Director of the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, talks about how Grassroots helps address our needs in Maryland - an increase in access to services while removing the stigma in accessing behavioral health care. Our client Brian also shares his experiences with Grassroots.

We are so honored to be featured in this impactful piece and are hopeful that it encourages more people to seek out important crisis and mental health support! You can watch this feature on public television at the end of 25-minute and 55-minute programs over the course of the next year. Thank you to all of our staff members who helped in making this such a success. We hope you check it out soon!

Grassroots needs your help to ensure we have the items our consumers need when they visit our 24-hour food and hygiene pantry at the crisis center, as well as the food pantry and clothing closet at the Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey. We also provide meals and meet the needs of 89 children and adults staying in our emergency shelter. If you’re able, please consider hosting a drive for Grassroots or bring by a few items to help us serve the community. We are only able to do this with your support. Thank you so much!

*If you are in need, please visit our 24-hour food and hygiene pantry at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia or the Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey at 10390 Guilford Road on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm. We are here for you!

Nearly 4,400 fewer U.S. teens and young adults died by su***de than projected in the first two-and-a-half years of the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, reported research published recently in JAMA. This is an important sign that this critical program is working to save lives. The study also found that the 10 states that had the largest increase in call volumes following the launch of 988, which included Maryland, saw significantly larger gaps in expected vs. actual su***de deaths.

Grassroots has answered calls, chats and texts to 988 since its inception in July 2022. In addition to supporting callers in Central Maryland, Grassroots also serves as a national back-up call center, supporting texters and chatters across the U.S. Replacing the previous 10-digit number (1-800-273-TALK), 988 was created to provide an easier, universally memorable way to connect individuals with counselors who can support through all sorts of mental health and substance use related crises. Grassroots started answering the previous su***de hotline in 2011.

Su***de deaths among 15- to 23-year-olds were 11% lower than what researchers expected between July 2022 and December 2024, according to the study. Other studies show that after speaking with a trained 988 crisis counselor, individuals are more likely to feel less depressed and less suicidal, as well as more hopeful about the future. More than 11 million contacts to 988 are expected in fiscal year 2027.

If you are in need of support, please reach out to Grassroots and 24 hours a day via 988. We are here to help you!

Grassroots is excited to celebrate this week's All Star, a team member who is making a difference at Grassroots through their work helping our consumers and other team members.

We are excited to celebrate Margaret, HR/Payroll Coordinator. Margaret came to Grassroots in March 2025. Since being with us, she has worked hard to provide HR services to everyone across the entire organization. Margaret plays an instrumental role in our onboarding, payroll, invoice, and benefits processes to name a few. She handles all tasks with a smile and endless patience. She was instrumental with the transition to ADP including all the training and learning of a new system while maintaining her regular duties. We are incredibly grateful for her efforts and dedication to Grassroots mission. Thank Margaret for all you do!

Grassroots was excited to participate in Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth's Third District Constituent Resource Fair yesterday.

“As Howard County’s free, 24-hour crisis, mental health, substance use and homeless services provider, Grassroots is honored to participate in the Constituent Resource Fair hosted by Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth. At a time when so many individuals and families are facing struggles, events like this are critical to ensuring our community is aware of and knows how to access the valuable services they need to strengthen their daily lives. Strong communities are built when organizations, neighbors and our elected officials come together to ensure that no one has to go through crisis alone,” said Dr. Mariana Izraelson, LCADC, Grassroots Executive Director.

Please contact us 24 hours a day if you need support - you can reach Grassroots by phone at 410-531-6677, or by phone, text or chat at 988. You can also walk in to our crisis center at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia.

Grassroots is excited to highlight Alex, a junior at Our Lady of Good Counsel high school, and a supporter of Grassroots! At his holiday family gathering, Alex chose to ask for donations for Grassroots in lieu of gifts for himself after hearing how teenagers can make a difference in the community at his church, St. Louis Catholic Church. He brought us a check for $1,000, as well as non-perishable food items, which were very much needed by the individuals and families who visit our crisis center. Alex and his family also decided to give of their time to volunteer at Grassroots in addition to participating in St. Louis’ activities, as the church is a dedicated supporter of many of Grassroots’ programs including the Cold Weather Shelter.

Alex shared: “I chose to give to Grassroots because during my priest’s homily he talked about giving back to the community, giving back to good places, and this place really does all of that. They give food to the homeless. They give help to the poor. They give help to the needy. I love working with these people. These people are amazing.”

Thank you so much, Alex, for showing the true impact that today’s youth can make and for helping support those in our community who are going through crisis. Your donation has made a big impact in helping individuals and families who come to Grassroots in need of mental health, substance use and homelessness support!
