Steuben County issues Travel Advisory until Noon on Monday

The Steuben County Office of Emergency Services and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office continue to monitor the winter storm, which is affecting our region. Steadier snow is moving into our area this afternoon and will last until later this evening into the overnight hours. However, the heavy snowfall will continue to create hazardous driving conditions at times. Storm totals of 12”-15” of snow are expected across many areas of Steuben County. In addition, temperatures will remain in the teens making road salt ineffective. This will make driving hazardous throughout the period.

Based upon current forecasts and conditions, the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services & the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office recommends no-unnecessary travel until 12:00 Noon on Monday. This is not a travel ban, but a recommended travel advisory. This travel advisory will allow plow crews time to clear roads and allow better access for the morning commute.

Remember, dial 911 for emergencies only.

For statewide travel conditions dial 511, mobile app or visit http://www.511ny.org/ For assistance with heating or shelter issues dial 211 for Steuben County Helpline.

With the storm coming we are asking if you are able to clear snow from the fire hydrents please do. It may save a life.

When snow piles up, fire hydrants can disappear. In an emergency, every second counts. A buried hydrant can delay firefighters from getting water where it’s needed most.

If there’s a hydrant near your home or business, please take the few extra minutes to clear at least 3 feet around it and a clear path to the street. That small act could make a life saving difference for a neighbor, a family, or a firefighter doing their job.
Thank you for helping us keep our community safe during this storm. ❄️

A Fireman's
Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town, the fire siren echoed blaring its sound. The firefighters came running from far and from near, and raced to the trucks quickly donning their gear.

And us in our bunkers, boots and helmets,
jumped to the engine to see where the fire's at. Down at the corner of Maple and Wilcox the dispatcher informed us of a house filled with smoke.

Smoke poured from the sides, from up and from down, yet up on the roof there was none to be found. So up to the rooftop we raised up a ladder from Engine 17, and climbed to the top to see what was the matter.

We came to the chimney and what did we see,
but a fellow in red stuck past his knees. Well we tugged and we pulled until he came out, then he winked with his eye and said with a shout.

"These darn newfangled chimneys they make them too small, for a fellow as I, not skinny at all." With a twitch of his nose he dashed to his sleigh, and called to his reindeer, "AWAY now, AWAY."

As we rolled up our hoses he flew out of sight, saying "God bless our firefighters" and to all a good night.

The Cohocton Hook & Ladder Co. is wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! 🎄🚒

Last night members of Perkinsville Fire visited the Cohocton Hook & Ladder Co. where 1st Asst Chief Feely did a joint refresher class on ropes, knots and basic rescue systems. Refresher trainings like this help keep us up to date on our skills and it's always good to work and train with our mutual aid partners.

Happy Halloween from everyone at the Cohocton Hook & Ladder Co.! We are excited to see everyone in their costumes so don't forget to stop by and see us for a treat! Here are some safety reminders as our streets will be full of children tonight:

If you're going to pass out candy remember to put your lights on!

When you're driving in the village please keep a close look out for children crossing the roads.

Please remind your children not to run across any roads. Waiting for no traffic and calmly walking across the road is the safest way to cross.

Small children should always be supervised.

Have a lot of fun! 🎃👻🕸🕷
