Next up is Ag-Business Summer Internships! These students are completing a four year program eventually earning a bachelor’s degree is Ag-Business and a big part of that degree is their internship of their choice! First up we have Tyler Bartlow Major: Agricultural Business Management B.T.
Farm/Location: Robbins Family Grain and North Harbor Dairy, Sackets Harbor, NY
Main Responsibilities: Equipment operation, equipment repairs and maintenance, operational finance, grain elevator and feed management, special project (technology audit)
One Take Away So Far: Employees seem to be more motivated and get more done when they aren’t micromanaged
How does this internship relate to your studies at school and your future career goals?: This internship allows me to put much of what I’ve learned in class to use, from soil science to precision ag applications to ag production management and ag financial management. This farm is run very similarly to how I want to run my operation in the future. They do everything in-house, from equipment repairs to hauling milk to installing drain tile, which saves them a lot of money considering the scale they are at. They also purchase equipment based on cost, warranty, and dealer support, not brand liability. Some people refer to this farm as the Skittle Ranch because they have equipment from so many different manufacturers. Good luck with the rest of your internship this summer Tyler!
