. Domestic violence is a real, serious, and widespread problem—and it’s often hidden in plain sight.

Here’s the truth, clearly and without blame:
• Domestic violence isn’t just physical.
It includes emotional abuse, manipulation, control, isolation, threats, financial abuse, and sexual coercion.
• It happens across all backgrounds.
Education, income, culture, or profession do not protect someone from being targeted.
• It’s about power and control, not anger or love.
Abusers use fear, confusion, and dependency to dominate another person.
• Survivors are often blamed instead of supported.
This silence allows abuse to continue and grow.
• The health impact is huge.
Domestic violence leads to depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, pregnancy complications, and long-term public health consequences.

One line that matters:

Domestic violence survives on silence. Awareness saves lives.

**LOVE AFTER ABUSE**

I honestly didn’t think I was ready for a relationship. I was not fully healed. I had actually decided to stop dating shortly before we met to focus on friendships and healing. I had relocated to another state all by myself, it was scary, I didn’t know anyone. I had joined a singles group and a girlfriend I had met through the group introduced us, not as a set up and he wasn’t in the singles group.

My soul kept urging me to meet with him after we met, but I didn’t really understand why at first. I did share my relationship history with him in stages, with caution. I was still unraveling and trying to understand myself, and was still very much in the thick of healing.

I have used many different techniques and modalities at different stages in my healing. I had many insecurities and doubts, and occasionally tried to run away. He was patient, kind, understanding, and quietly sat beside me and held space for me every step of the way. He gave me a safe space to heal while I continued extremely difficult, deep work. He loved me unconditionally throughout all of it and continues to this day.

I believe his love transformed and healed me in ways I never expected possible. It took me a while, but I knew this was a healthy relationship by his steadfast, calm, unconditional, gentle love for me, even in the moments I was not easy to love. Even in my panic attacks and sometimes anger that was directed at him.
I love his beautiful calm nature. I love his love for others around him. I love how he never forgets to open my door even if his arms are full. I love how he walks beside me, never in front of me. I love how attentively and with love he listens to everything I do, no matter how out there it seems. I love how we have made a beautiful, peaceful home that feels like warm sunshine every time I step into it. I love that everything is fun, even grocery shopping. I love how he makes me laugh. I love how he has let me be exactly who I am every minute of every day, the good bad and the ugly.

I want every woman to know that a soft, beautiful, safe and real love IS not only possible, it is what you deserve. It can help you heal as much as other ways of healing. You don’t have to be fully healed in order to love again. It take a long time to unravel years of abuse, it’s a process give yourself so much grace in the journey of healing and don’t focus on it, but be open to the possibility that a man may cross your path and come along side you as you become the woman that you want to be in a life that feels safe and warm.

It is my passion to help other women who have been through what I have know that a beautiful safe life is possible, new love or not. That there is another side because I remember a time when I couldn’t see it at all, and I was so sad and felt so broken and beyond repair.

People who have not walked the journey do not understand why we didn’t just leave? Everyone moment is different when they decide to leave and I loved my friends that stood by me during that time. Did you ever have people ask you why didn’t you just leave and what was your response. For me mine was it can look like it beautiful on the outside but behind closed doors it is a very different story and I loved the broken person and thought I could help him for a very long time.

"RUN FROM THE LAW, WALK TO A CELL!" MACOMB COUNTY PROSECUTOR ANNOUNCES ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY ON FLEEING AND ELUDING, SEEKS BI-PARTISAN LEGISLATION REFORM

Mount Clemens, MI – On June 11, 2025, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido declared a new, stringent policy: there will be no reduced plea offers for individuals arrested for Fleeing and Eluding, a felony, in Macomb County. This decisive action comes amidst a tragic surge in accidents caused by drivers attempting to evade law enforcement, resulting in grievous injuries and fatalities across the county.

Prosecutor Lucido is also urgently calling upon Macomb County and all State of Michigan legislators to collaborate on drafting robust legislation designed to curb the blatant disregard for public safety inherent in fleeing from police.

"Every time a driver flees, they gamble with innocent lives. This new policy is our commitment to ending that gamble," stated Prosecutor Lucido.

Recent events tragically underscore this impact. On May 24, 2025, a woman lost her life when her vehicle was struck by a driver fleeing Warren police. On August 12, 2023, a teen fleeing police crashed into a vehicle, killing a mother and her unborn child and causing traumatic brain injury to her husband. On April 29, 2021, a 20-year-old man was killed when a stolen Jeep Cherokee crashed after a high-speed pursuit was terminated by deputies due to extreme speeds.

More recently, on May 7, 2025, a 17-year-old fleeing police after an alleged robbery collided with a Sheriff's patrol car. This week, a high-speed chase caused by a fleeing driver suspected of intoxication critically injured a male passenger in Detroit. These incidents demonstrate the profound risks fleeing drivers pose to our residents and officers.

Prosecutor Lucido emphasized, "If you put your foot on the gas to run from the police, you just committed a felony. With help from Macomb County legislators, we want to send a message: ‘Run from the Law, Walk to a Cell!’”

Currently, Fleeing and Eluding is a felony offense in Michigan, carrying potential penalties of two to 15 years imprisonment and steep fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. However, Prosecutor Lucido highlighted a critical flaw in the current system: there is no mandatory jail time.

To address this, Prosecutor Lucido is advocating for a bi-partisan legislative effort to implement common-sense amendments to the existing fleeing and eluding statute, including the statutory enhancement of consequences such as mandatory prison time. "For the people of Michigan, the consequences of fleeing and eluding must be statutorily enhanced," he affirmed.

LEGISLATIVE COLLABORATION UNDERWAY

In a further step towards addressing this critical issue, Prosecutor Lucido announced he will be meeting with selected Macomb County legislators this month. These discussions will focus on potential legislative reforms informed by the actual criminal cases and devastating consequences witnessed firsthand in Macomb County. The goal is to foster bipartisan support for solutions that will enhance public safety for all Michigan residents.

"Just as the crime of Felony Firearm carries a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence, it's time to consider if fleeing and eluding should carry the same mandatory penalty. The average weight of a vehicle is over 4,000 lbs. A fleeing vehicle can cause as much damage as a bullet," said Lucido. "We’ve seen the carnage inflicted upon families here in Macomb County. It’s time to address such reckless behavior statewide."

The following shows the number of Macomb County Prosecutor cases issued that include a fleeing and eluding charge:

YEAR - TOTAL

2025 thru May 31 - 139

2024 - 403

2023 - 401

2022 - 363

2021 - 352

2020 - 229

2019 - 226

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to achieving justice and upholding the laws of the State of Michigan. All individuals of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
