Happy Juneteenth Day!

A celebration of freedom but also a stark reminder that our rights are threatened and our democratic institutions are under attack. Now more than ever, must be vigilant and work to protect the freedom and rights that belong to all of us.

"June 19, 1865, marks the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston learned of their emancipation and became “official” American citizens when Union troops arrived with General Orders, No. 3. This order was delivered more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation."

While Juneteenth wasn’t officially recognized as a holiday until 2021, the celebrations have been going on since as early as 1866.

"Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President and state Rep. Terrence Upchurch, D-Cleveland, said Juneteenth is a reminder that progress does not happen on its own.

“A right on paper means little if people cannot reach it in real life,”

Congresswoman Shontel Brown held a press conference in response to the FBI raid of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative offices and staff, board members, volunteers and civic leaders across Ohio. Rep. Brown announced a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel demanding an explanation for the extreme and aggressive action. The letter was signed by Representatives Brown, Kaptur, Sykes, Beatty and Landsman.

Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, Cleveland Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones, (and other Councilmembers) Senator Kent Smith, Marcia Mockabee, Urban League President and high school senior TJ Thomas voiced their deep concern on the actions intended to intimidate volunteers and voters, and all stated clearly that Ohioans have a right to organize, register voters fully participate in our democracy.

Cuyahoga County BOE Executive Director Anthony Perlatti spoke of the professionalism of the BOE as well as the checks and balances of the voter registration process. The Cuyahoga County BOE recently won an award from the bipartisan U.S. Election Assistance Commission. He also mentioned that Ohio is considered the gold standard in election integrity.

The FBI raid is an attempt to intimidate people organizing and helping people in our communities participate in our democracy.
It must stop.
We will not be intimidated.
We will stand strong and continue the effort.

Yes, we agree that the death penalty should be abolished.
Thank you Governor DeWine.
Time for the legislature to act.

Gov. DeWine said his earlier support for Ohio's death penalty in 1981 was based on his belief that it could deter serious crimes. However "But after decades of watching Ohio’s system operate, DeWine said he no longer believes it achieves that goal. He pointed to the long delays between sentencing and ex*****on, noting that many inmates die before their sentences are carried out."

It is now up to the legislature to repeal the death penalty

Senate Democratic Leader Nickie Antonio, a longtime advocate against the death penalty, said DeWine’s announcement should add urgency to the repeal effort.

"Gov. Mike DeWine announced Tuesday that he opposes the death penalty and urged Ohio lawmakers to repeal it, marking a dramatic reversal for the man who helped create the state’s current capital punishment law."

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has spent years trying to abolish Ohio’s death penalty, arguing it is costly, ineffective and risks wrongful convictions. But those efforts have repeatedly stalled in the Republican-controlled legislature.

“Like Governor DeWine, my feelings about the death penalty have changed over the years in my career in corrections,” “It’s difficult to overstate just how much the ex*****on process impacts everyone involved, and I hope Ohio continues to move away from the death penalty.” Ohio Prison Director Gary Mohr, who oversaw
15 ex*****ons.

Of course:
"House Speaker Matt Huffman, a Lima Republican, has been more direct. He promised to “vigorously oppose” any effort to repeal Ohio’s death penalty."

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced Tuesday that he opposes the death penalty, ending years of speculation about his views on capital punishment.

Please take a few minutes to call Gov DeWine;
Tell him to veto HB 472.

Last week, the lawmakers rushed HB 472, a really bad anti-voter bill, through the Ohio Statehouse, and it's now up to Governor DeWine to stop it with a veto.

The Governor needs to hear from you! Go to the link below to email him, or call him directly at (614) 644-4357, or (614) 466-3555.

Tell him HB 472 would:
📪 Make voting by mail much harder for eligible Ohio voters, especially those who are elderly, disabled, students, and living in rural areas
👀 Introduce identity theft and privacy concerns
💸Provide no new funding to BOEs to implement & manage huge new system

Rushing complicated election law always means unintended consequences that will hurt voters and election officials, and cost money and time to make right. Go here to email the governor to tell him to veto HB 472:
