Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all.

We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.

Today, we celebrate emancipation, reflect on our ancestors’ strength and resilience, and recommit to the work of advancing justice, equity, and unity. Through education, action, and solidarity, we move closer to a world rooted in true freedom for all.

Afterward, we will convene in the community for the Freedmen’s School House Dedication at 11:00 AM.

The Zetas of Johnston County proudly congratulate Chad Whitaker, a Zeta Male Network member, on his graduation from East Carolina University on May 8, 2026.

Chad, the son of Soror Michelle Lewis, graduated with a double major in Biology and Chemistry and a minor in Pharmaceutical Methods and Techniques. He is also a member of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society at ECU.

Congratulations, Chad! We celebrate your hard work, dedication, and achievement.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day!

Elder abuse is a serious global issue impacting millions of older adults every year. On this important day, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated stands united in raising awareness about the mistreatment and neglect of our elders.

We are committed to creating a world where our seniors are respected, valued, and protected. Let’s take action by:

💙Educating ourselves and others
💙Supporting and checking in on our elderly community members
💙Advocating for the rights and dignity of older adults

Together, we can be a voice for those who may not be heard.
