McCone County Hay Bale Challenge!

Businesses, farms, ranches, and school classes it’s time to get creative!

We’re inviting everyone to join the fun from Circle High School, Redwater, and Bo Peep classes to our local businesses, farms, and ranches. Grab a hay bale and get creative!

Funny, clever, agriculture-themed, school-themed, business-themed, or completely over the top we want to see what you come up with!

You DO NOT have to be in town to participate! If you’re out in the country, decorate your bale, take a picture, and join in on the fun.

Pictures can be sent to Tandi Kassner at the McCone County Extension Office. Just let us know which business, farm/ranch, or class you are representing.

A winner will be picked on October 29!

Grab a bale, gather your crew or class, and get creative. Let’s see what McCone County can come up with!

Thank you to everyone who came out to After Harvest: Planning for the Year Ahead today at the VFW!

We heard from Tim Seipel on fall herbicide applications and w**d management, Tiziana Oppedisano on integrated insect management, and Whitney Tatafu with AgWest Farm Credit on year-end financial planning. We had some great conversations throughout the afternoon and finished things off with a spaghetti supper.

Those who attended were able to pick up 2 pesticide applicator points along the way!

Thank you to our speakers for making the trip and sharing their knowledge, and to all of our producers who took the time to attend. I’m already working on packing in a few more pesticide point opportunities before the end of the year, so keep an eye out for what’s coming next!

AFTER HARVEST: Planning for the Year Ahead

We know September is BUSY and many of our producers may still be in the field, but we have a great opportunity to bring some MSU specialists to our area, so we are going to take advantage of it!

Join us **September 9th starting at 3:00 PM** for an afternoon of practical information you can take back and use on your operation.

We will have:

➡️ **Tim Seipel with MSU** talking about fall herbicide applications, w**d identification, timing, resistance and stewardship.

➡️ **Tiziana Oppedisano with MSU** covering insect management, scouting, economic thresholds and when an insecticide treatment is actually warranted.

➡️ **Whitney Tatafu- AgWest Farm Credit** talking about farm financial management as we head into year-end and tax season and start planning for another crop year.

☕ We will have a coffee and snack break and then finish the evening with **SUPPER provided!**

If you are still needing pesticide points, remember that the current credit period ends in December. **We have requested 2 pesticide applicator credits for this meeting and they are pending approval.**

I know it's hard to get away from the field this time of year, but take a few hours to come learn, ask questions, visit with our specialists and other producers, grab some supper and start thinking about the year ahead!

📅 **September 9, 2026**
⏰ **3:00 PM**

The McCone County Fair Board Golf Tournament was a huge success!

Twelve teams came out to enjoy a great day on the course while supporting the Fair Building Project. We were also fortunate to have seven gift baskets donated by CHS, C&B, Lehner Insurance, the VFW, the McCone County 4-H Council, and the McCone County Fair Board.

Participants enjoyed a pulled pork lunch complete with baked beans, potato salad, and dessert. We are incredibly grateful for the generous food donations that helped make the day possible.

Thanks to the support of our golfers, sponsors, donors the board raised approximately $3,500+, with all proceeds going directly toward the new fair building.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported such an important community project. We appreciate your generosity and look forward to continuing to build a stronger future for our fairgrounds.

Grasslands Federal Credit Union is honored to partner with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines in presenting a Member Impact Fund grant to MSU Extension-McCone County in the amount of $51,446!

FHLB Des Moines generously matched more than $2.40 for every $1 contributed by its member institutions. Through the program, they were able to fund 287 applications across Montana that directly impact local community organizations.

The McCone County 4-H Council and McCone County Fair Board are actively working to rebuild a cherished community building lost in a devastating fire in early 2025. The planned facility will serve the community not only during August fair and 4-H events, but also year round for educational workshops, family gatherings, community organization meetings, weddings, and class reunions. We are excited to partner with them in helping to make their vision a reality!
