No more suffering in silence. I was proud to introduce a resolution acknowledging May as Lupus Awareness Month, and May 10th as World Lupus Day.

At May’s Board meeting, we heard moving testimony from several advocates, including Kimberly Spight-Walker (Gamma Pi Rho Lupus Sorority, Incorporated), Lisa Klaslo of the Lupus Society of Illinois, and more. The resolution recognizes Kimberly as a tireless advocate and leader.

While lupus can strike anyone, approximately 90 percent of those living with lupus are women, most commonly developing between the ages of 15 and 44. Lupus disproportionately impacts Black, Latina, Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander women, who are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than white women.

Lupus can cause severe and debilitating symptoms, yet more than half of Americans report knowing little or nothing about lupus, underscoring the need to increase public awareness of this serious and often misunderstood disease.

I want to thank the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Society of Illinois, and Gamma Pi Rho Lupus Sorority, Inc. Interest Group, for their leadership and advocacy.

Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with folks at the Near North Unity Program Meeting and the Avondale Neighbors Monthly Meeting. Community meetings are one of my favorite places to talk to my constituents and hear about local, neighborhood-specific issues. Catch me at another neighborhood meeting soon!👀

Last week, I celebrated one year of Karina’s Law in Illinois with . This law is critical to protecting survivors of gender-based violence by enabling the court and law enforcement to remove fi****ms as part of orders of protection. Gender-based violence is on the rise in Cook County, and elected officials and advocates must continue their work to provide legal protection and safety to survivors. I am proud to sit on the Chicago-Cook County Violence Against Women Task Force which seeks to advance important policy and procedural changes to protect those impacted by domestic violence.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a devastating and deadly disease.

At this month’s County Board meeting, I introduced a resolution to declare May as ALS Awareness Month. During this month, we honor and remember the individuals, families, caregivers, and communities affected by ALS.

Thank you to Alex Meixner from The ALS Association for his unwavering advocacy and for speaking in front of our board about ALS. The Association’s support for those impacted by ALS is immeasurable.
