You may not realize it, but my family is Korean. Before you come at me, I know I’m not Korean. But Korean culture, language, and traditions are a big and important part of our family culture.
But any guesses on generally which parent is the one who passes on culture to their children? (It’s the mother). The irony isn’t lost on me, but our family is different and my husband, Seokhee, and I are proud of it.
We aren’t “Korean-Korean”, we aren’t your typical Korean American family either. My children speak a unique dialect of Korean (mostly words). They call me Omma (옴마), not Umma (엄마) because of how my (white American) parents and family pronounce Korean words (no hate! We love and appreciate the effort!). I hope they are never embarrassed or put to shame by fellow Koreans or white Americans because they don’t do or say things “right”, because they are not Korean “enough” or white “enough”.
They have a rich heritage on both sides of their family and I want them to be able to know and celebrate all of those sides.
Sunny Village Cafe was born from experiences we had in Korea during a visit in 2023. It is very much rooted in that experience and we were influenced by what we saw and experienced when we built our space: the quiet room, the design, and of course, the menu!
When you step into our space we hope you see and appreciate those nods to our family culture and roots. Happy AAPI Heritage Month ♥️🇰🇷
