Please join us in welcoming back Chief Ryan Colman!
Chief Colman previously served at Washington College from 2022–2025, where he successfully led the department through its transition to Campus Police after all officers received appointment from the Governor of the State of Maryland. During his tenure, he spearheaded the redevelopment of departmental policies, training programs, equipment modernization, and patrol vehicle upgrades, helping elevate the professionalism and operational capabilities of the department. Under his leadership, the department earned back-to-back Training Excellence Awards, while Chief Colman was internationally recognized by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) as the 2024 recipient of the Award for Administrative Excellence.
Chief Colman’s leadership focused heavily on rebuilding trust within the campus community through strong community policing initiatives, increased officer visibility, and meaningful engagement with students, faculty, and staff. He also worked to strengthen partnerships with allied law enforcement agencies, including the Chestertown Police Department and the Kent County Sheriff's Office, fostering a collaborative public safety network dedicated to serving the Washington College community.
In July 2025, Chief Colman departed Washington College after being recruited to serve as the first ever Deputy Chief of Campus Police at Frederick Community College, where he played a key role in establishing and implementation of the college’s first Campus Police Department. His work there included developing operational procedures, training standards, departmental structure, and assisting with the rollout of the new agency.
As of July 1, 2026, we are proud and fortunate to welcome Chief Colman back to Washington College after only a year away. Chief Colman now returns to lead the department once again as Chief of Campus Police and Executive Director of Public Safety continuing the mission of strengthening campus safety, professionalism, and community partnerships across our campus.
Welcome home, Chief!
