Oregon Democrats in county after county have passed resolutions opposing the PEACE Act. It is an ignorant assault on our communities. We will fight to defeat it.

Initiative Petition 28 would make it illegal to injure or kill animals and would effectively ban hunting, fishing and the breeding of animals.

STATEMENT OF THE CHAIR OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF JEFFERSON COUNTY ON THE MAY 2026 ELECTION

This election season, the Jefferson County Democrats have organized to support candidates and issues that we believe can move our communities forward. We have spoken about and rallied for better infrastructure, better health care, and smarter use of our shared resources.

It is a privilege to be able to play our role in Democracy here in our community. Now, the ballots are cast and the counting is starting.

Whatever happens, we know that one election will not be enough. That we as a community need to continue to bring all of our collective wisdom and heart to bear on the problems before us.

Our communities have become more active in this election than your typical “off year primary.” To me, it signals a turning of the tides. A turning that is not partisan, but driven by our grass roots.

A turning towards greater involvement. And in turn, greater accountability by our elected representatives.

In the course of this campaign, I have gotten to know a lot of citizens who are so moved to improve their community that they donated time and effort. Some became candidates and stepped forward to be the center of our conversations. Some volunteered.

Whatever the results, I savor working with all the people I have encountered to bring new ideas and practices to Jefferson County and Oregon.

Some of you are really weird folks, but you all have shown your desire for a better Jefferson County. Thank you for being a part of this 250 year old experiment with me.

What to do with your Oregon ballots? Get them counted! Local elections get won by 100 votes; you — or your neighbor — could be the decider. Trump has made changes to postmarking, so at this point it is best to put your SIGNED ballot in a drop box.

You are a Democratic voter, the most powerful thing in Jefferson County in May 2026.

And right now, some of us are multiplying our power by helping get out the Democratic vote. We are not doing it for our health; we are doing it because we have a huge opportunity.

Based on past elections, there will be about 6,000 votes cast in Jefferson County this election. Your vote — and your efforts to remind your neighbors to vote — mean we can have a new library and a new face in the county commissioner’s office.

Right now — along with Jessi, Dawn, Jim, Michelle, Bridget, and others — I am reaching out with texts, postcards, calls, and door knocking to get the Democratic vote out.
I am thrilled with the effort. Our friends in the Latino Community and Warm Springs are making efforts as well.

I believe Jefferson County will see something important and surprising May 19.
They will see that we matter. That we expect to be heard. That we will have a hand in the direction our community goes. Every extra vote my calls and texts and postcards earn is a message to Jefferson County: Democrats will be heard. We expect institutions that strengthen the fabric of our community so we can all thrive.

Thank you for all you do. Let’s get those ballots in!
