Sprinkler season is here, and so are our City of Cheney water restrictions. Please take a moment to review the schedule below and do your part to protect our community's water supply and aquifer.

On April 8, 2026, the Washington State Department of Ecology declared a statewide drought emergency, the fourth consecutive year the entire state has been under a drought declaration. Low snowpack, a warm winter, and years of compounding precipitation deficits mean we are heading into a tough summer. And with what's likely to be a serious fire season ahead, we want our aquifer strong and ready.

Here's how to water responsibly in Cheney:

πŸ“… EVEN-numbered addresses: water on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday
πŸ“… ODD-numbered addresses: water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
🚫 ALL addresses: no watering on Monday, giving our aquifer a day to recharge
πŸ€– Automated irrigation systems: water between 10pm and 8am
🌿 Non-automated systems: water between 8pm and 8am
πŸ₯• Garden watering (everyone): between 8pm and 8am
⏱️ Keep each watering session within a 2-hour window

Water is a precious resource and our community's lifeline. A little planning now goes a long way toward protecting what we all depend on. Thank you for doing your part!

Opportunity to help our community fully enjoy the summer pool season this year!

Help us make a splash for local kids this summer! β˜€οΈπŸ©±πŸ©³

We’re partnering with Spokane Parks Foundation supporting a swimsuit drive benefiting children and families in the Cheney community, and we need your help.

A brand-new swimsuit may seem like a small thing, but for many children it means the chance to confidently participate in swim lessons, summer activities, pool days with friends, and safe water experiences they might otherwise miss out on. For families facing financial hardship, purchasing swimsuits often falls behind more immediate necessities. Your donation can help a child feel included, confident, and ready to enjoy summer alongside their peers.

Please consider donating new swimsuits for children of all ages and sizes. Donations can be dropped off at the Cheney Conoco station.

A huge thank you to Cheney Conoco for partnering with us and serving as our collection location. We appreciate your support in helping care for kids and families in our community!

Together, we can help every child dive into summer with confidence πŸ’™

Last weekend, in the rainy and windy weather, I joined in on a historic walking tour of downtown Cheney organized by The Southwest Spokane County Historical Society and Cheney Parks & Recreation. It was absolutely fascinating! I loved how they connected old photos to our current downtown so you could really see and feel the history as you walked through town. If you get a chance to take one of these tours, I highly recommend it! You'll get a new appreciation for our beautiful town.

Last week I got a behind-the-scenes tour of our Cheney Municipal Court from our Court Administrator, and there's so much happening right here in City Hall.

The court serves our local community every Thursday, with sessions you can actually watch live on the court's YouTube channel. You might be surprised to learn that court is held in the same room as City Council chambers -- we just rearrange things to make it work for both. I love that about a small city.

I was super impressed with the work the Cheney Community Court team is doing to support folks in our community getting back on their feet and reducing recidivism. It's a therapeutic program built around helping people address the root causes of their situation, and it is making a huge positive impact on our community members.

Fun fact: the oldest Cheney jail I know of still standing is right here in City Hall, two cells and a shower, now used for storage. There's also a more recent one over at the police station, same story. A little piece of Cheney history hiding in plain sight.

A big thank you to Court Administrator Dave Lucas and his team for their time, for answering all my questions, and for sharing about the important work they do for our community.

Here's a recap from our last Council meeting including an overview of the proposed ordinance to ban the sale of kratom within city limits. Last meeting we had our first-reading of this proposed ordinance with the second-reading coming tonight. Tonight will also be the confirmation vote on the appointment of our new City Finance Director. Public comment is always welcome and encouraged at the start of every meeting.

We have another City Council meeting tonight (May 12th) so let's review what happened at our last meeting. The video recording of the meeting is available to watch and you can also read the (draft) meeting minutes that are up for approval tonight. Notes This meeting was a longer one,

This year's Cheney Mayfest was bigger and better than ever, and City of Cheney showed up! For the first time, we had booths right downtown alongside the other vendors, with 5 tables representing core city functions, Cheney Parks & Recreation, and Cheney Police Department, plus the Fire Station Open House just up the street.

It means a lot to be part of a community event like this, and getting to actually talk with residents face-to-face is one of my favorite parts of this work. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

What a beautiful way to start a Saturday morning in Cheney. Before the festivities of Cheney Mayfest kicked off, I had the honor of attending the mural unveiling at City of Cheney Veterans Memorial Park, and I am just so proud of this community.

This stunning piece was brought to life through the incredible collaboration of Cheney Community Heart and Soul , Communities In Schools of Northeast Washington , ST Window Painting, The Craft Cupboard, and Cheney Public Schools Cheney High School Art Club, in partnership with Cheney Parks & Recreation and the Cheney Park Board, and made possible with support from ICCU.

The mural honors the veterans who have served this community, pays tribute to the park that bears their name, and celebrates Cheney as a whole. It is the kind of thing that reminds you why community art matters.

To everyone who had a hand in making this happen: thank you. You gave us something truly special.
