Through all of my door knocking and having great conversations with our residents our Taxes come up in every conversation as a main concern.
In many of my conversations I have heard from you that there is a tipping point at where families would have to move out of Chaska if their taxes continue to rise at the same rate.
We have also talked about setting Strategic Goals for the community and how not having a clear strategic vision will end up with decisions being made that have higher financial implications to our taxpayers.
Looking back at City discussions to build these new facilities (Library, Public Works Bldg, Police Station, Renovate City Hall) it looks like they started this past year. A year ago the talk was about City Square West Downtown, now that project isn’t a priority due to the economic downturn and finding developers in this choppy economic climate. If that project does become a priority will it be another large tax increase ask of our tax payers?
These new projects that have a magnitude cost of $116m should have taken years to plan for to lessen the impact to tax payers. These projects will be financed by the city with bonds. Today, long term interest rates are the highest in 20 years and will cost taxpayers more dollars.
As we all have seen there is a need for new facilities. However, given the current economy and all of the inflation of higher prices, being placed on all of us, groceries, fuel, clothing, utilities and taxes, is this the right time?
Should we prioritize building these facilities and roll into longer term development thinking, instead of building them all at once? Prioritizing the facilities by the greatest need to be built first.
Supply chain issues and building supplies now cost more and will make these projects more expensive to build.
As I have mentioned throughout my campaign, our taxes have risen faster then Chanhassen and we now pay more in city tax ($258.00) on a median home then Chanhassen tax payers, this isn’t sustainable for the long-term. We need a strategic, well planned approach, that minimizes the financial burden being placed on Chaska taxpayers. We then need to over-communication to you the Chaska Taxpayers on the plan, bringing all voices to the discussion.
