Impact+ Abuse Prevention Services IMPACT+ is a 501c3 nonprofit that is dedicated to addressing domestic violence at its source- with the abuser. Check us out!

We educate the community, train professionals, and provide DVIP/BIP services in 5 NC counties. IMPACT+ is dedicated to providing best practices services to domestic violence offenders in an effort to end family violence in our community. The IMPACT+ program educates and seeks to initiate change in the behavior of adults who batter their partners by providing practical information on how to change abusive behavior and exploring non-controlling and non-violent ways of relating to their partners. IMPACT+ is a private NC state-certified DVIP- Domestic Violence Intervention Program- for adult men who acknowledge or have been referred for using coercion, threats or acts of violence toward their partners and/or adolescent children. We provide IMPACT+, the program for abusers, in these NC counties:

Gaston
Cleveland
Lincoln

Are we paying attention or playing politics? I was interviewed yesterday by - my thoughts about the torture and murder of 19 year old Isabella Stroupe in Charlotte last week. I work with abusers; I run groups for abusive men. It’s my passion; to stop domestic violence at its source: the abuser. This kind of program, most frequently referred to as a BIP (Battering Intervention Program), a DVIP (Domestic Violence Intervention) or AIP (Abuse Intervention), is the only type of intervention that is shown to work. Not counseling or therapy. Not anger management. Not a cognitive behavioral program. Why? Because abusers don’t abuse because of mental illness or poor anger management skills. They abuse because they have the right to; sometimes even have a social mandate to abuse. They may have some mental health problems; they may be in pain- but that is not the CAUSE; they still have a pro-abuse mentality that allows them to believe they can use their power over their victim to abuse her. In some cases, they derive pleasure from harming others- and there’s no fix for this- for the high that this type of abuser gets. Thankfully, most abusers aren’t like this- they may enjoy the power. THEY ARE NOT PSYCHOTIC- they know what they’re doing- therefore aren’t mentally ill for the purposes of determining competence for trial.
-could my program have helped this !@*?! # abuser? It’s doubtful- he TORTURED her for months! I suspect he derived pleasure from torturing her. Maybe as a teen? But he’s young, doesn’t even have his adult brain yet, so this probably escalated quickly. -Don’t look just for physical injuries as red flags- look for controlling behaviors.
- We need to look at this as a failure of our system.
- They lived in an apartment complex a mile from my house. Apartments have thin walls. He tortured her for months. WHY DID THE NEIGHBORS NOT REPORT WHAT THEY MUST HAVE HEARD? (Sorrynotsorry for yelling) I suspect he isolated her- but just one phone call from a neighbor could’ve saved Isabella’s life.
