🚨 SCAM ALERT: Do NOT Fall for the "Missed Court" Phone Scam! 🚨
The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of scammers calling local residents pretending to be law enforcement officers.
The scammers are claiming that you have missed court or have an outstanding warrant, and they are demanding that you go to a kiosk immediately to deposit money to clear your name.
🛑 NEVER DO THIS! 🛑
Please keep these facts in mind to protect yourself and your wallet:
We will NEVER call you to demand money. The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for payment over the phone, via a kiosk, or through prepaid gift cards, cryptocurrency, or apps like Venmo/CashApp.
We will NEVER threaten arrest for immediate payment. True law enforcement operations do not give you the option to "pay your way out" of a warrant over a phone call.
Scammers can "spoof" phone numbers. Even if your caller ID says "Stanly County Sheriff's Office" or shows a local 704 number, it could be a fake number generated by a scammer.
đź“‹ What should you do?
HANG UP immediately. Do not engage with the caller or give them any personal information.
Verify the call. If you are genuinely concerned about a missed court date or warrant, call our official office directly at (704) 986-3714 (or the Stanly County Courthouse) to check your status.
Spread the word. Talk to your family, friends, and elderly neighbors about this scam. Awareness is our best defense!
Bottom Line: The Stanly County Sheriff's Office will never ask you to pay a fine at a kiosk over a phone call. Hang up, stay safe, and report any suspicious calls to us.
