BREAKING: MAGA Senator Thom Tillis stabs Donald Trump in the back and announces that he will not support a simple-majority vote to change the Senate’s rules to help speed up the confirmations of 160 pending MAGA nominees.
Tillis isn't running for reelection so he has far less to fear...
“I just generally don’t go nuclear," said Tillis.
The so-called nuclear option is the use of simple-majority votes to create new precedents. It can be used to circumvent the 67 votes needed to change Senate rules.
Tillis added that "if we do this, then that means the new bar for rules [changes] is a simple majority" rather than the 67 votes.
Democrats have demanded that the nominees — which Trump is desperate to ram through to further entrench his power amidst growing scandals and plummeting popularity — go through time intensive votes for even low-level picks.
Trump loyalist senators have been batting around the idea of eliminating the hours of debate time required between cloture votes and final votes. They've also suggested packaging less important nominees for block confirmation votes.
To pass any of these rules changes, Republicans would need at least 51 votes on the Senate floor and Democrats won't support the motion, meaning that defections like Tills make it unlikely to succeed.
