The Department has become aware of speculation about the future of Welch Community Hospital. To be clear, there is no intent to close Welch Community Hospital, nor has closure been contemplated. In fact, we are exploring options to ensure that Welch will continue to deliver care to McDowell County and surrounding areas for the long-term in the face of real financial challenges that the hospital faces. This process to identify options for the continued operation of Welch remains in the early stages and is ongoing.
Any option associated with the future operation of the hospital will involve a unique set of factors that will have to be addressed to ensure that Welch continues to provide care for the long-term. The Department believes it prudent to address such factors earlier in the process rather than later. We are concerned that not doing so could limit the type of options that can be explored. As such, we have been engaging with relevant people in the community to address issues that will need to be resolved as part of any evaluation process. We believe doing so will help maximize the number of viable options that can be considered for the long-term operation of Welch.
We recognize the challenges that Welch and other hospitals face during a very challenging time for healthcare, but we are committed to take action to preserve this incredibly important resource for McDowell County. The ability of Welch to continue to deliver care to its community has been and will continue to be of paramount importance in guiding our process to identify options for the long-term operation of the hospital. The Department and the leadership of Welch Community Hospital remain fervently committed to this mission.
