Yesterday our team participated in the Illinois State Ambulance Association Lobby Day and had honorees receive "Stars of Lincoln" EMS awards at the Lincoln Library. We had a full day of meeting with legislators to discuss issues of importance to our agencies, our providers, and our patients. Congratulations to Aaron and Joshua on your awards!

Every second counts. Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere - on a sidewalk, at work, at the gym and at home. But here’s the powerful truth: Using an AED before emergency services arrive can mean the difference between life and death.

This week, we honor Gary Blurton's decades of service in EMS -

Gary started in EMS in 1978. Started with PRO 5/5/2008 and end on 11/15/2025 with AMT.

What accomplishment in your EMS career are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of the fact that I have been able to work with so many great people and I have learned so much from them.
I'm also surprised that I have been able to continue to do this job for the 47 years.

What's one call you'll never forget?
Early in my career, I worked in a city that had a medium security prison. The prison system used buses to transport prisoners to and from different prisons. While the bus was stopped at the Vandalia Prison, a prisoner dropped a cigarette in the compartments under the bus, and the bus caught fire. All the prisoners were cuffed to a single bar that ran down the length of the bus. When the bus caught fire all the prisoners rushed the door to attempt to get out and caused a blockade at the door. There were 35 prisoners on the bus that had to be extricated, and most were suffering from smoke inhalation. Two of the inmates were in cardiac arrest and unfortunately died.

What advice would you give to a new EMT or paramedic on their first shift?
LISTEN TO THE PATIENT. Work as a team with your partner.
What kept you going on the hardest days?
My partner. Your partner and you have had the same experience, and you both can help each other.

What's the first thing you want to do on the morning you don't have to check the truck or answer radio traffic?
Think about the responders that are answering the call. It will take some time before I don't think about the folks still answering the call.

Our paramedic Paige stopped by today to recognize Squad 171 for a successful cardiac arrest resuscitation. Bystander CPR was also performed, which underscores the need for every able person to learn Hands-Only CPR. https://youtu.be/LPUoPwbRvL8?si=-Ws0QKutNWJnEPgp

Our team’s hearts go out to everyone affected by this very sad incident.

Statement from Interim Fire Chief Tyler Funk
“Last night, two Champaign firefighters and an Arrow Ambulance EMT were seriously injured while responding to assist a person in mental health crisis. Both firefighters remain hospitalized in serious but stable condition. In this case, as in many others, the heroic actions of our firefighters, paramedics, and police officers prevented a more serious outcome. The Champaign Fire Department extends its heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to Lieutenant Courtney Moravek and Firefighter Robert (Bobby) Poynton. We extend our thanks to everyone who answered their call for assistance. We ask the community to keep our first responders in your thoughts and prayers.”
