⚡ June is Lightning Safety Awareness Month! ⚡

As families head to beaches, campgrounds, parks, and hiking trails this summer, remember that lightning can strike miles away from a storm.

If you hear thunder, move indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle immediately. Avoid beaches, water, tents, isolated trees, and high ground. When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors® and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside. Older adults, people with disabilities, and those with access and functional needs should plan ahead by identifying accessible shelter locations and bringing essential medications, communication devices, and emergency supplies.

🏖️🏕️ Stay weather aware, have a plan, and stay safe this summer.

On the left, a lifeguard hut stands on a sandy beach with ocean waves in the background as lightning flashes across a bright blue sky. On the right, a campground with a tent, campfire, picnic table, and pine trees sits beneath dramatic lightning strikes over a mountain lake. Large text at the top reads, “Lightning Safety.” A blue and gold message box at the bottom states, “Be Weather Aware. Have A Plan. Stay Safe.”

🍕🚌 Transitional Youth Program Outing Success! 🚌🍕

Our Transitional Youth Program participants recently took a trip to BJ’s Restaurant, where they put their independent living skills into action!

As part of the outing, students practiced travel training by riding the bus, learning how to navigate public transportation safely and confidently. Once at the restaurant, participants built their self-advocacy and communication skills by ordering their own meals, making choices, interacting with restaurant staff, and managing their dining experience independently. These real-world experiences help prepare young adults for greater independence while building confidence, social connections, and community engagement.

We are proud of all the participants for stepping outside their comfort zones and demonstrating their growing skills!

June is Immigrant Heritage Month.

At the Disabled Resources Center, we recognize and celebrate the many contributions immigrants have made and continue to make to our communities. Immigrant Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor the diverse cultures, traditions, experiences, and stories that enrich our nation and strengthen our communities.

We believe that every person deserves the opportunity to live, work, and participate fully in their community with dignity and respect. This month, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and leadership of immigrants, including immigrants with disabilities, whose voices and experiences help build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

Together, we honor stories, celebrate cultures, and build inclusive communities.
