We wanted a baby girl. We told our agency to only call us for girls 0-1. We had already adopted 3 boys. We had no daughters. I wanted to walk a daughter down the aisle at her wedding. I wanted to go to a Father/Daughter dance. I wanted to experience all the good that comes with being a dad to a girl.
But I needed something else. I needed HIM. He is not a baby girl. Instead he was an almost 16 year old young man. He needed a Dad. He needed a listening ear. He needed a constant in his chaos. He needed a family. At that point, I knew it wasn’t about age or gender. It was about a kid needing a family. We knew we were his family.
I’m not sure who adopted who this week? Did we adopt him? Or did he adopt us? I don’t think that really matters. What I do know is that we are now a legal family, and never again will I put our future inside of a checkbox. It’s okay to know your limits. But when you close doors that are trying to open, out of fear, you could be missing out of a family that YOU need. I needed this son.
