WHAT EXPERIENCE AND QUALITIES DO YOU FEEL YOU BRING TO THIS OFFICE?
I have lived in Carthage for two decades and experienced the beauty and charm that can bring the community together. When it comes to dealing with government, I was a Vice President/Chief Steward for AFSCME Local 2149 in the Department of Transportation in Pennsylvania over 10 years. Handled contract negotiations which involved legislators from around the state. For 35+ years I was a sports official around the country. Organizations included youth, collegiate, and professional leagues and I was honored to officiate games at Ft. Liberty (fka Ft. Bragg). I am a volunteer on the Town of Carthage Appearance Committee. I am approachable and I believe that transparency and accountability are the keys to being successful.
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THIS POSITION?
My work ethic. I will research all possible remedies before making a final decision. I will work for citizens in Carthage. I am a stickler for policies and procedures that are agreed by the people. The Town of Carthage Charter, UDO and Land Use Plans are the guides to how the town is governed and I will follow those guidelines unless the NC General Statute or Moore County Government amends the language to our policies. This is a non-partisan position and therefore the party has no place in decision making. I will represent Carthage! I believe in teamwork and being a team player, that being said. There are losing and winning teams. I always want to put my efforts into a winning team. I will be present at committee meeting.
IDENTIFY YOUR TOP THREE (3) ISSUES THAT YOU WISH TO ADDRESS DURING YOUR TENURE IN OFFICE AND RANK THEM IN ORDER OF PRIORITY.
1) Accountability and transparency by staff and elected officials Hold ourselves accountable with every decision that's made. Be transparent by recording town meetings in their entirety. By making sure quoted chapters in the G.S. are properly labeled and assessable. 2) Rural projects Work in the corridor is important and appealing to the passer-by, but there needs to be more involvement in other areas as well. The rural areas, the parks, shops where families can shop for their children and themselves. 3) Affordable Housing Developers are building homes that range $300,000 and up. This is not affordable in a town that has a median household income of $41, 731 and ranks high in the state and county with the number of disabled citizens.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR OFFICE, IF ELECTED?
Better signage notifying the community of when meetings are held. The signs posted around the town for meetings are horrible. Notification in a newspaper that only comes out twice a week, and using the Town of Carthage website that is usually under construction and difficult to maneuver is unacceptable. I want to bring respectability back to the board by including the whole town in decision making i.e., Unified Development Ordinance and Land Use Plan. Water bills can issue reminders of meetings. Eliminate adding agenda items without giving the community proper notice of the new talking points that will be added.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON ANY ISSUEOR CONCERN THAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU (OPTIONAL):
Carthage is changing and growth is coming. The whole theory of "Affordable Housing" means nothing without an infrastructure that is accommodating. Sustainability is just as important as promoting growth. The current infrastructure cannot survive at the pace the town is growing. Grants are being obtained slower than homes are being built. Based on the Rural Transformation Streetscape Downtown Project Grant request, median household income in Carthage was listed as $41,731, which does not pay for- $144,700 homes. Carthage as the County Seat does not receive property taxes from county buildings. The downtown corridor is a throughfare for those heading to other desirable locations in Moore County. There needs to be a moratorium in place until the Government Center and infrastructure can catch up with current plans already approved. Parking needs to be addressed. Carthage Elementary, New Century, and Union Pines HS need serious consideration for remodeling. UP is over capacity.
