You'll be hearing this term a lot more in 2026. As ceasefires multiply across the Middle East, deconfliction cells have become the unglamorous machinery keeping fragile truces from collapsing back into war. Here's how they actually work.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will resign as Labour Party leader, bowing to months of pressure from within his own party and paving the way for Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade.

๐–๐‡๐€๐“ ๐‡๐€๐๐๐„๐๐„๐ƒ
Standing outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer confirmed he would step aside after losing the confidence of much of his parliamentary party. "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace," he said.
His voice reportedly choked with emotion near the end of his brief statement. "Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first," he said. "That is why I will resign."
Starmer said he had already informed King Charles III of his decision and will ask Labour's National Executive Committee to open leadership nominations on July 9, with the process completed by the time Parliament breaks for summer recess on July 16. He will remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen, with a new leader expected in place by September 1 at the latest.

The resignation follows Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham's return to Parliament last week via a Makerfield by-election, a seat opened specifically to give him the eligibility needed to challenge Starmer for the leadership. Burnham confirmed Monday he will run, calling the moment "the beginning of a transition" that must be handled "in an orderly and responsible way."
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, long seen as Burnham's most likely rival, instead endorsed him Monday, saying he was convinced Burnham "can win the fight of our lives against the forces of nationalism." Analysts widely expect Burnham to become prime minister unopposed or with only token opposition in the weeks ahead.
Starmer's decline accelerated after Labour's disastrous showing in May's local elections, where the party lost nearly 1,500 council seats amid a surge for the populist, hard-right Reform UK party led by Nigel Farage. His position was further weakened by the fallout from his since-fired US ambassador's undisclosed ties to Jeffrey Epstein, and by a fraying relationship with President Trump, who said Monday that Starmer had "failed badly" on immigration and energy policy.

Starmer's exit, less than two years after a landslide 2024 victory, underscores the volatility now defining British politics, where economic strain, immigration anxiety, and the rise of Reform UK have eroded patience with established leadership at a record pace. Whether Burnham can stabilize Labour's position before the next general election will likely determine if Britain settles into a period of renewed direction or continues its recent pattern of rapid leadership turnover.

China escalated its trade standoff with Washington Monday, announcing fresh export restrictions on 10 American military-related companies and barring government purchases from 46 more, in direct retaliation for a US move blocking Chinese tech firms from defense contracts.
๐–๐‡๐€๐“ ๐‡๐€๐๐๐„๐๐„๐ƒ
China's Commerce Ministry said Chinese companies will now be blocked from exporting "dual-use" items โ€” goods with both civilian and military applications โ€” to the 10 sanctioned firms, which include drone manufacturers and rare earth producers. The list includes AVEOX, Red Cat Holdings, Teal Drones, IMSAR, Jaia Robotics, Ball Aerospace & Technologies, Oshkosh Defense, L3Harris Maritime Services, MP Materials, and USA Rare Earth.
The restrictions reach beyond China's own exporters: companies and individuals in third countries are now barred from transferring Chinese dual-use goods to any of the sanctioned American firms, though Chinese exporters can still apply for approval to ship items deemed "genuinely necessary."
Separately, China's Finance Ministry barred government entities from buying products from 46 additional American companies, including multiple units of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and General Dynamics, without specifying a reason.

China's Commerce Ministry framed the move as a direct response to the Pentagon's decision earlier this month to expand its list of Chinese military-linked companies, which now includes tech giants Alibaba and Baidu โ€” a designation that blocks affected firms from competing for US military contracts. Baidu has rejected the accusation, calling claims of military ties "totally baseless."
Beijing argued the US expansion runs counter to an understanding reached between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during Trump's state visit to Beijing in May. George Chen, a partner at the advisory firm The Asia Group, called China's response "an unsurprising and proportionate" move, but noted its practical bite may be limited: most of the sanctioned firms already do little or no business in China given their close ties to the US defense establishment.

This exchange lands barely a month after Trump and Xi met in Beijing under the banner of easing tensions, underscoring how quickly the underlying US-China rivalry over technology and defense access can reassert itself even amid stated diplomatic progress. With both nations now layering increasingly specific, named restrictions on each other's companies, the relationship appears to be settling into a pattern where cooperation and confrontation run on parallel tracks rather than replacing one another.

Middle East & Diplomacy | The World Brief Editorial Desk
US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian officials gave the public conflicting accounts Monday of whether Tehran had agreed to let UN nuclear inspectors back into the country, as the two sides wrapped up a second day of high-stakes talks in Switzerland aimed at shoring up a fragile ceasefire.
๐–๐‡๐€๐“ ๐‡๐€๐๐๐„๐๐„๐ƒ
Vance said Monday that Tehran had agreed to admit International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors into the country, a move that would mark a significant step after Iran's parliament suspended IAEA cooperation last summer.
Iran pushed back almost immediately. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said, in comments carried by state news agency IRNA, that Iran's interaction with the IAEA would proceed "in accordance with Iran's obligations under safeguard agreements" and in line with decisions of Iran's Supreme National Security Council โ€” language that notably stopped short of confirming any new commitment.
The talks, held at the Bรผrgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, brought together negotiators from the US, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan. Qatari and Pakistani officials separately said the negotiations made "encouraging progress," though the session got off to a rocky start after President Trump threatened over the weekend to "hit Iran very hard again."

Negotiators did reach concrete agreement on one front: establishing a "deconfliction cell" intended to stabilize the ceasefire in Lebanon, which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the arrangement's "first real test."
The US has separately set up a monitoring mechanism through US Central Command so policymakers have real-time information on fighting in Lebanon, following repeated ceasefire violations attributed to both Israel and Hezbollah. Notably, Israel was not named as a party to the new mechanism, and a spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, David Mencer, said Monday that "Israel is not a party to this memorandum of understanding or of the negotiations with Iran."
๐–๐‡๐˜ ๐ˆ๐“ ๐Œ๐€๐“๐“๐„๐‘๐’
The gap between Vance's framing and Iran's own statement underscores how fragile the broader US-Iran-Israel diplomatic track remains, even as both Washington and Tehran publicly describe progress. Israel's absence from the new Lebanon mechanism raises the question of whether an agreement reached in Switzerland can actually hold on the ground, where Israel continues to carry out strikes inside Lebanon.

Four months after the US-Israeli campaign against Iran began, the region remains stuck in a holding pattern โ€” formal talks proceeding even as facts on the ground, and even basic descriptions of what's been agreed, diverge sharply depending on who's speaking. Whether the Lebanon deconfliction cell becomes a genuine stabilizing mechanism or just another contested claim may be the clearest signal yet of whether this diplomatic track is built to last.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he will resign, paving the way for the country's seventh leader in a decade after facing an uprising within his centre-left Labour Party.

Labour had lost more than 1,000 seats on local councils in May elections, results widely interpreted as a repudiation of Starmer's performance.

Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision but would remain in the job as caretaker until a successor is chosen, with nominations opening July 9.

His likely successor is Andy Burnham, the popular ex-mayor of Greater Manchester who secured a return to Parliament last week, and who confirmed he would seek to replace the departing leader.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called Starmer "a terrible prime minister" and challenged Labour to appoint a new leader sooner, warning: "The country is not being governed."

Alan Greenspan, the influential economist who steered U.S. monetary policy during his five terms as chairman of the Federal Reserve under four presidents, died Monday, according to his wife, NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell.

The powerful economic policymaker died from complications of Parkinson's disease.

Greenspan served five terms as Fed chairman under four presidents, starting with Ronald Reagan, who nominated him in 1987; his term under George W. Bush expired in 2006, making his eighteen-and-a-half year tenure the second longest as head of the nation's central bank.

The Federal Reserve said in a statement: "Under his leadership, the Federal Reserve achieved a sustained era of price stability that supported economic growth and helped anchor the public's confidence in the institution."

He was also faulted for decisions that critics say created the conditions for the global financial crisis of 2007โ€“08, such as advocating for deregulation of the financial sector.
His legacy remains debated by economists on both sides of the monetary policy spectrum.

Two people were killed, including a Montreal police officer, in what authorities believe was an attack targeting law enforcement in the city's Cรดte-des-Neiges borough; a second officer was transported to hospital in critical condition but is now stable.

Montreal police confirmed the officer killed was Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who had been a member of the force since 2021.

The suspected shooter reportedly distributed a violent incel manifesto targeting women.

The last time a police officer was shot in Montreal was 24 years ago, officials said.

Following the shooting, the RCMP sent a bulletin to multiple police agencies warning about possible copycats, noting that a 105-page manifesto reportedly originating from Alberta was "allegedly encouraging citizens to shoot police officers."

An explosion at Qatar's main liquefied natural gas processing facility has killed 13 people and injured dozens; Qatar's Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said the blast at the Ras Laffan LNG complex was due to a "technical malfunction" and ruled out any "hostile" action.

Al-Kaabi confirmed the 13 killed were all Indian and Pakistani citizens, while the injured are receiving treatment and none are in a life-threatening condition.

Production at the Barzan plant had been "intentionally and completely halted" since December 2025 for urgent maintenance work and restarted only two days before the incident.

QatarEnergy said the explosion had no impact on its LNG export operations or port infrastructure, seeking to reassure global markets over the continuity of gas supplies.

The Ras Laffan complex exported almost a fifth of global seaborne LNG supply last year, and its restart is being closely watched by gas traders around the world.

China on Monday announced sanctions on 10 American military-related companies in response to a recent U.S. move that bars some leading Chinese tech companies from defence contracts.

The Commerce Ministry said Chinese companies would be blocked from exporting "dual-use" items to the 10 companies, which include military drone makers and some involved in rare earth mining.

The 10 companies include AVEOX, Red Cat Holdings, Teal Drones, IMSAR, Jaia Robotics, Ball Aerospace, Oshkosh Defense, L3Harris Maritime Services, MP Materials, and USA Rare Earth.

Beijing also barred government entities from purchasing products from 46 American companies, including subsidiaries of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and General Dynamics.

China's Commerce Ministry said the American sanctions run counter to the consensus that President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump reached during Trump's visit to China in May.
Analysts say the measures escalate technology and defence tensions despite ongoing diplomatic contacts between Beijing and Washington.

Two students armed with handguns opened fire in a high school in the central Philippines on Monday, killing three fellow students and wounding another seven; the suspects, aged 14 and 15, were arrested.

The suspects and victims were students of San Jose National High School in Tacloban city, where the mid-morning shooting happened, according to regional police chief Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy.

An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the shooting in the government-run school, which has more than 1,500 students.

Capoy said the suspects, who were close friends, said in initial questioning that they were bullied in school.

Although gun violence is common in the Philippines, school shootings are extremely rare, with this being one of the first in Tacloban.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was said to be saddened by the shooting.

Groups associated with AI and tech are trying to influence elections from Senate races to local offices, even as Americans register increasing discomfort with the technology; AI-focused super PACs have already spent $43.3 million on congressional races this cycle, according to OpenSecrets.

OpenAI and Anthropic compete for everything from funding and staff to customers, are both planning massive initial public offerings later this year, and are locked in an ideological feud over how AI should be built, commercialised and governed.

On one side of the political fight is Leading the Future, mainly funded by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, an OpenAI investor, and OpenAI's president and co-founder Greg Brockman.

In February, Anthropic announced it was contributing $20 million to a related nonprofit, Public First Action, that "opposes federal efforts to freeze state progress without adequate federal safeguards."

Federal AI legislation remains stalled in Congress, with lawmakers still hashing out how to even take up the issue despite bipartisan support.

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova was suspended for four years Monday for refusing an anti-doping test; the International Tennis Integrity Agency said she refused a test in December, and that the decision was reached by an independent tribunal.

At a hearing, Vondrousova presented explanations that stress and poor mental health had affected her decision-making, and raised concerns for her safety, but the tribunal concluded the evidence offered "no compelling justification" for the test refusal.

Vondrousova's ban expires June 21, 2030.

She received a bigger penalty than players who failed recent tests, including Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, who served suspensions of mere months in comparison.

She can appeal the decision to the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.
WTA peers including Ons Jabeur and Paula Badosa offered public support, while the ITIA defended the testing system as essential to protecting clean competition.

After Reform UK's success in May municipal elections, Labour lawmakers began calling for Starmer's ouster; in a coordinated move, a fellow Labour lawmaker resigned, allowing Burnham to run in a June 18 special election for a parliamentary seat in Makerfield, which Burnham won decisively.

The Eurasia Group, a political risk firm, predicts Burnham will take office on July 18 or 19.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who had been Starmer's most likely internal rival, threw his support behind Burnham on Monday.

The final blow to Starmer may have come last week when Defence Secretary John Healey โ€” a Starmer loyalist โ€” resigned over Starmer's military spending plans, followed by armed forces minister Al Cairns.

Analysts say Burnham will face many of the same issues that stymied Starmer, including rising global energy prices.
The leadership contest nominations formally open on 9 July.

Wyndham Clark finished at 4-under to claim the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Clark's victory at one of America's most demanding courses marks his second major title, cementing his status as one of the PGA Tour's premier players. The win sparked immediate commentary on Clark's ability to perform under pressure on a course long regarded as one of the most punishing in championship golf. Shinnecock Hills has historically produced some of the most contested scoring conditions in major history, with the field battling shifting winds and tight lies throughout the week. The result will reshape the major standings heading into the second half of the season with The Open Championship approaching.

As one of the longest-serving Federal Reserve chairs in U.S. history, Greenspan's reign at the central bank coincided with the so-called Great Moderation, a period of stability from the mid-1980s until 2007 marked by low inflation, stock market gains and strong economic growth.

John Williams, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, said: "His extraordinary 18 years as chairman left behind an enduring legacy, and his dedication to the institution, the field of economics and public service continues to inspire generations of central bankers."

Stephen Oliner, a former senior Fed official, told Reuters: "I think the deification that came just before the financial crisis was never really deserved, and I think the lambasting that he took after he left was never fully deserved either."

During Trump's second term in January 2026, Greenspan signed a joint statement with former Fed and Treasury officials to denounce a criminal probe of then-Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
His passing comes as Greenspan's successor-once-removed, Kevin Warsh, navigates a new era of political pressure on monetary independence.

Regional police chief Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy said the suspects barged into two rooms during the attack, with most of the dead and wounded being female students; police recovered at least 40 shell casings at the scene.

One suspect obtained the 9mm pistol used in the attack from an aunt, a police officer who is now being investigated; the other suspect used a .38 calibre revolver.

The incident prompted Tacloban City to suspend classes at three schools, and the Department of Justice said it would allow law enforcement to investigate "subject to all applicable safeguards under the law, especially those involving children in conflict with the law."

The Department of Education described it as a "high-alert situation" and said it was mobilising assistance to affected learners.

According to the Philippine National Police, there were nearly 5,000 gun violence cases nationwide in the current data period.

China's Commerce Ministry said the restrictions would extend beyond Chinese exporters to "organisations or individuals in any country or region" transferring or providing dual-use items originating in China to the sanctioned entities.

Although both the US and China agreed following Trump's May Beijing visit to work toward reducing tariffs, tensions have since resurfaced over technology and defence, with the Pentagon adding Alibaba, Baidu and BYD to its list of firms allegedly linked to the Chinese military.

Baidu said the suggestion that it is a military company is "totally baseless."

China's Commerce Ministry argued the US actions violate the diplomatic understanding reached between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump during Trump's visit to China in May.
Analysts at The Asia Group described Beijing's response as proportionate but warned the extraterritorial reach of the restrictions adds significant compliance risk for non-Chinese companies trading in Chinese-origin goods.

Following the Montreal shooting, the RCMP sent a bulletin to multiple police agencies warning about possible copycats, noting a 105-page manifesto reportedly originating from Alberta allegedly encouraged citizens to shoot police officers.

Quebec's Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafreniรจre cautioned people against sharing graphic videos and declined to comment on reports that a civilian may have been shot by a police officer during the incident.

Lafreniรจre confirmed that Quebec's police watchdog, the BEI, is investigating the shooting.

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette said she was "deeply shaken" and urged the public to "allow the authorities to do their work and to avoid speculation."

Officials noted that the last time a Montreal police officer was shot was 24 years ago.
Canadian federal and provincial authorities are now assessing whether Canada's gun laws require further tightening in response.

Qatar has been eager to restart LNG exports after declaring force majeure following Iranian strikes on the Ras Laffan complex; QatarEnergy told customers last week it could restore about 50% of production capacity within a month after safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is restored.

Iranian strikes damaged LNG Trains 4 and 6, removing 12.8 million tonnes per year โ€” about 17% of Qatar's LNG exports โ€” with repairs expected to take three to five years.

Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi put annual lost revenue at $20 billion.

Analyst Tom Marzec-Manser of Wood Mackenzie said the Barzan explosion is more likely to affect the domestic market, with petrochemical feedstock allocations possibly curtailed to prioritise power and water utilities.

Qatar is the world's second-largest exporter of LNG, with Asian markets among its main buyers.
The compound disruption of war damage and accidental explosion now raises serious questions about the timeline for global gas market normalisation.

On a sweltering Saturday evening, roughly 60 kids took the field at Frank D. Zaccaria Memorial Park for practice with the Palestino Soccer Academy, a youth club anchored in Northern New Jersey's large Palestinian-American community but open to children of every background."Without soccer in life there's nothing," 13-year-old Taim Nadin, originally from Qatar, said during a water break. "If I didn't play soccer, I'd be nothing, right?"Coach Omar Abdulaziz, who moved from the West Bank to Puerto Rico as a teenager in the 1980s, started the club three years ago to teach kids about soccer's place in Palestinian culture and to help them process the toll of the war in Gaza. He said some of the players arrived emotionally overwhelmed, and the field became something else entirely: a release valve."Soccer, to us, is a moment to disconnect, a moment of tranquility, a moment to detach from the suffering of reality," Abdulaziz said.

The Palestinian national team didn't qualify for this World Cup, and in Gaza itself, organized play has become nearly impossible โ€” Palestinian officials say 90 percent of the territory's sports infrastructure has been destroyed and roughly 450 people connected to the sport have been killed in Israeli attacks. So the New Jersey players have built their own connection to the game elsewhere, rallying in particular around Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal, who waved a Palestinian flag during a recent championship celebration after speaking out against anti-Muslim chants at matches in Spain. The image now lives as a phone wallpaper for several of the boys. For some players, the stakes are deeply personal. Obaida, born in the West Bank, said five close family friends were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The day he got the news, he said, there was no scheduled practice โ€” so he called teammates anyway and they played for hours."You can ball in the pitch, or you can bawl at home, I guess," he said.
