Lori Parks, Editing & Proofreading

Lori Parks, Editing & Proofreading I've been an editor, proofreader and writer for books, websites, magazines, college essays and marketing materials for over 25 years. Each word matters!

The power of punctuation, the lure of preciseness and the batty, demented Dr. Olasky sucked me into the world of editing. Professor Olasky at UT Austin was an old curmudgeon of a man who grilled us daily on grammar usage and AP Style. He feverishly peppered us with the qualities of a good editor; verbally shaking our shoulders to awaken us to the minutia and attention to detail that he knew were o

f paramount importance. He wailed about the calamity of a misplaced comma; the heavy-handed exclamation point; the comfort of brackets. He would shake and rant and flail his arms when talking about whittling down sentences to exact the correct meaning and intention. Too many words are like too much noise—no one can hear a damn thing! He scared the hell out of me but I listened, entranced, and knew that editing was the career for me. I felt the same passion that he did for words and shook my fist in the air toward the unfair heavens if I saw anything as catastrophic as a misplaced apostrophe. I was relieved, at the age of 19, that I wasn’t the only one who was batty for words.

During COVID-19, why are college essays more important than ever?

William R. Fitzsimmons, Harvard College’s dean of admissions, addressed the changes to the application process because of COVID-19: “It’s really important to understand the challenges that kids are facing, to acknowledge that those challenges have suddenly become much bigger, and that you can’t really assess kids fairly unless you understand that context… The statement encourages students to report these challenges and obstacles and reassures students that what they write will be confidential and will only lead to a more positive review of their applications.”

Now that a lot of schools have gone to pass/fail, don’t require standardized test scores and extracurricular activities are being cancelled, there are very few ways to stand apart from the rest of the college applicants. It is well known that a powerful, well-written statement or essay can push an admissions officer off of the fence and can make the difference between a college acceptance or denial.

I’ve edited everything from history books, to magazines, to websites and I have to say that my favorite part of my job is working with students on their essays. I love the process of brainstorming about topics, the back-and-forth of edits and the final sculpting of an essay with a result in which the senior is proud. (But the best part is when they call me to say they’ve gotten into their dream school!)

Contact me if you'd like help separating from the pack!

I know that this is a stressful time for high school seniors--there's so much pressure in deciding which colleges will fit his/her needs, filling out applications and then deciding on essay topics. I would love to work with you! I've helped a lot of students separate themselves from the pack by the power of their essays.

The college essay is becoming more important than ever as schools are becoming more holistic in their selection process. If you have stellar grades and test scores, a strong essay will differentiate you from the other applicants with similar scores. If your grades are borderline, a powerful well-written essay could tip the scales in your favor. Contact me if you would like help in crafting your story in a way that will make the admissions committee take notice.

The UC application deadline is tomorrow-- make sure you don't wait until the last minute to apply because it's not uncommon for the websites to crash! I continue to help students who are applying to other schools with later deadlines so keep me in mind for your kid's peace of mind!

We all know that grades, courses and standardized test scores are paramount in the college admissions process but the essays separate you from the pack. An insightful, well-written essay can sometimes make the difference between a college acceptance or denial. A lot of parents hire college coaches (I know I did for one of my kids!) and while they are great for narrowing down the college list and getting financial aid, they oftentimes aren't the best editors. (You can't be good at everything!) I've helped a lot of teens get into their dream schools and I'd love to help yours!

College application deadlines are approaching--how are your kids doing on their essays? It's a stressful time for Seniors (and their parents!) so it's tempting to wait until the last minute to begin the essays. I can help navigate them through the process so it's not so overwhelming. I've been an editor for over 25 years and really enjoy brainstorming with teens about topics and creating essays that will set them apart from the rest of the applicants. Ahh...so we got through the UC deadline (whew!) but I know many of your kids are still struggling through their college essays for many other colleges! PM me if you need an editor or a mentor or someone who can just talk them through the process...it's a lot for them and I would love to help!

I remember when each of my boys began their senior year of high school. It's a bittersweet feeling to know you have less than a year before another chapter begins for your child! It's a thrilling and daunting year for your children as well as they try to keep their grades up, continue with their extracurricular activities and begin filling out college applications and essays. I've been an editor since 1990 for every genre from books to websites to college essays. One of my friends asked me to help her daughter with her college essays and because it was so satisfying, I've been extending my services to the children of my friends and acquaintances. I enjoy talking to them about the prompts and then guiding them through the process until we have an essay in which they're proud. My rates are reasonable and my references are excellent. I'd love to talk to you if you'd like to take one item off of your already full plate. Now, take a deep breath and enjoy the year!!

Marketing letters are an integral part of receiving new customers, public relations and in this case, funding. Having an editor to look over your business' promotional pieces, can make a huge difference in achieving results. Thank you, Leah, for letting me know that we were successful in getting a grant for educational software for the orphans in Baja!

Hi Lori,

You helped me edit a letter to Learning A-Z on behalf of CDV. Just so you know~we got full funding for the project!

YOU gave me the courage and inspiration to do a direct ask! This was the push I needed to get what we wanted! I can't wait to see how this pans out.

Please celebrate. This is a unbelievable opportunity for the CDV kids! Yahoooo....❤️

Y...Gracias! Gracias! Gracias

Leah
