Letort Regional Authority

Letort Regional Authority The LRA’s mission is to protect and preserve the Letort Spring Run and its watershed.

LRA protects and preserves the Letort Spring Run and assures its greenway is a setting for friends or families to cross paths with wildlife and leave feeling enlivened. LRA established and maintains the 3-mile Letort Nature Trail on the run's banks. That popular rail-trail begins at LeTort Park in downtown Carlisle and extends upstream. Citizens have recently extended the trail to the southern boundary of the Letort watershed at Heisers Lane, near Boiling Springs and the Yellow Breeches.

Special thanks to the Cumberland Valley FFA high school group who helped plant some trees today, notably several Chinkapin Oaks. The forest along the Letort is dominated by Hackberry and Black Walnut. Oaks are rare and we are excited to be bringing them back to the riparian zone, especially Chinkapins who will flourish in our rocky limestone soil.

Hardwood cuttings of American Elderberry were planted behind Lamberton today along the trail. This native plant’s flowers attract numerous pollinators, and the berries are a crucial food source for birds and animals. We’ll be planting lots more native plants this year! Stay tuned. 🌱

Take a moment to check out this great blog post highlighting our recent mural project. We are incredibly grateful to artist Suzanne Rende and the Dickinson College Center for Civic Learning and Action for making this project possible through their generous support.

York-based artist Susanne Rende painted a mural on a Carlisle trail in September 2025.
