The final week of coursework has arrived and the energy among our recruits was unmistakable.

This week’s focus brought them into the world of vehicle extrication and the critical role firefighters play when assisting specialized rescue teams. Classroom lectures laid the foundation, covering strategies for coordinating with technical rescue units and understanding the complexities of modern vehicle construction.

With lessons fresh in their minds, recruits moved straight into hands on work. They practiced extrication techniques that required them to think critically while applying safe, coordinated, and controlled actions to reach each objective. The training became real as tools met metal and scenarios demanded quick thinking and calm ex*****on.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Scooby’s Asap Towing for providing the vehicles that made this level of training possible. Their support helps prepare our communities firefighters for the moments when skill and readiness make all the difference. We commend our recruits for their dedication and wish each of them success as they prepare to take their Firefighter II certification exam.

The Acadiana Volunteer Fire Academy recruits are off this week in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable time with family and friends. As you prepare your holiday meals, remember that if you are frying a turkey, keep the fryer a safe distance from any structures, monitor your equipment closely, and never leave the process unattended.

Training will resume next week. While we’re off this week, check out footage from our latest LPG live burn and watch our recruits in action.

This week at AVFA, our recruits continued their Firefighter II training with focused classroom sessions on fire and life safety initiatives, along with advanced fire suppression concepts. These lessons push them to think beyond the basics and prepare for the realities of serving their communities.

They carried that knowledge into hands-on scenarios designed to sharpen judgment and reinforce teamwork. One highlight was training on the LPG Christmas Tree prop, which safely simulates a gas-line emergency with real flames and heat, giving recruits invaluable experience in controlling and shutting down gas fires.

A big thank-you to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Fire and Emergency Training Academy for providing the prop and instructors. Stay tubed for more updates from our recruit class

AVFA Recruits Advance into Firefighter II Training

This weeks training opened with classroom instruction focused on establishing and transferring command, along with critical strategies for fire scene operations, suppression, and smoke control systems. These lessons build the foundation they will rely on when operating at emergency scenes.

We were also fortunate to have support from the Louisiana State Fire Marshals Office FETA, who brought out their flashover prop to give our recruits a realistic look at fire behavior. It demonstrates how to identify changing conditions, recognize dangerous environments, and make safer, more informed decisions on the fireground.

Thank you for following along as our recruits continue their journey. We look forward to sharing more of their progress in the weeks to come.

This week, the Acadiana Volunteer Fire Academy proudly celebrates our newest group of recruits who have officially passed their Firefighter I Practical and State Exam.

We are incredibly proud of each recruit for their dedication and determination throughout this process.

These individuals represent departments from across the Acadiana region and have devoted their time to better serve our community. Their commitment and passion for the fire service truly represent the values of what this profession is all about.

Acadiana Volunteer Fire Academy Weekly Update!

This week, our recruits focused on wildland fire training, learning how these fires start, spread, and are controlled. They reviewed fire behavior, tools, and tactics used in the field, and discussed the importance of safety and teamwork when working in unpredictable outdoor environments.

Recruits also spent time reviewing and practicing their skills in preparation for next week’s Firefighter I practical exam. From equipment checks to basic firefighting techniques, this week was all about reinforcing knowledge and building confidence before test day.

We’re proud of the dedication and effort every recruit has shown throughout the academy. Best of luck to all AVFA recruits as they prepare to take their Firefighter I exam this week. Your hard work has prepared you well!

This week at the Acadiana Volunteer Fire Academy, our recruits focused on new skills including firefighter survival, rehab, and fitness. Knowing how to stay safe and take care of themselves during and after a fire is absolutely essential. It’s not just about fighting fires, but also about making sure every firefighter can come home safely to their families.

To wrap up the week, they took on the entanglement prop challenge. This hands on exercise teaches them how to stay calm and think clearly when they get caught up or trapped. It’s the kind of real-life training that can make all the difference in an emergency.

These skills build the foundation for AVFA recruits success and safety on the job. Make sure to check back next week to see what new challenges and lessons they are tackling!

Acadiana Volunteer Fire Academy Weekly Recap

This week, our recruits dove into both search & rescue and salvage & overhaul operations. As we near the end of Firefighter I training, these chapters are not only essential to the curriculum, but also represent the very heart of what it means to serve and protect.

During search and rescue, recruits learned to navigate low-visibility environments, conduct rapid primary searches, and make critical life-saving decisions. It’s not just about firefighters finding a way in; it’s about making sure everyone finds a way out.

In salvage and overhaul, our recruits focused on methods of preserving property after the flames are out. This includes locating hidden fire, preventing rekindles, and minimizing further damage. Effective salvage and overhaul operations is a commitment to protecting not just structures, but the lives and stories connected to them.

With just a few weeks left before the Firefighter I exam, our recruits are giving it their all to finish strong. Want to follow their journey? Stay tuned for next week’s update as they take on the entanglement prop and more hands-on challenges.
