California's Red Rock Canyon State Park, 2.5 hours north of LA, features colorful desert cliffs and spectacular rock formations, camping, picnicking, a visitor center, trails, and 30 miles of dirt roads for hiking & OHV. Colorful fluted folds of white, pink, red and brown cliffs are the result of wind and rain eroding soft materials from beneath hard lava flow layers. This dramatic scenery has been viewed over thousands of years by Native Americans on trade routes, famous settler families such as the survivors of the Death Valley trek and the Illinois Jayhawkers, then gold miners, and in more recent times, in hundreds of movies and commercials. Miles of primitive roads can be explored by foot, off-highway vehicle, horse, and bike. Call (661) 946-6092 for park regulations and more information, or visit http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=631.

Today we say goodbye to Sir Sam Neill, an actor whose talent, wit, and quiet strength left an unforgettable mark on generations of movie lovers. As Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, he inspired generations of future archaeologists and scientists by reminding us that curiosity is one of our greatest strengths.

For those of us who cherish California's landscapes, it's especially meaningful that scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed at Red Rock Canyon State Park—a place forever connected to the magic he helped create on screen.

Thank you, Sir Sam Neill, for the timeless stories, the unforgettable performances, and the legacy you leave behind.

Rest in peace. 🦖❤️🌄
