Great work California Fire Department!
FIRE AT LOCAL PROCESSING PLANT QUICKLY CONTAINED
CALIFORNIA, MISSOURI – March 15, 2026 — At approximately 11:00 p.m., the California Fire Department was dispatched to a reported Structure Fire at 1001 E. Smith Street, Pitman Family Farms turkey processing plant, formerly known as Cargill.
Callers reported to Moniteau County Emergency Dispatch that a fire was visible in the lunchroom area and possibly above the ceiling. Due to the nature of the call, the California Rural Fire Protection District and Jamestown Fire Protection District were also dispatched through automatic mutual aid.
California Police officers and Moniteau County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the facility, they obtained information indicating the fire involved an air conditioning unit located above the break room area.
Fire crews arrived and made entry into the facility, where visible smoke was present in the lower level of the building. Crews advanced to a second-floor mechanical area and located a large industrial condenser unit with visible flames. Water was quickly applied, and the fire was extinguished. Crews then verified the fire had not extended into the roof structure before shifting operations to smoke removal and ventilation.
The incident was brought under control within approximately 15 minutes of firefighters’ arrival. Crews remained on scene for about 90 minutes to ventilate smoke and conduct overhaul operations. Multiple ventilation fans, along with the facility’s exhaust system, were used to remove smoke from the building.
The fire was contained to the condenser unit and its immediate surroundings.
The California Fire Department would like to thank Moniteau County Emergency Dispatch, the California Police Department, Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office, California Rural Fire Protection District, Jamestown Fire Protection District, and MidMO Ambulance for their assistance.
