SCOOTER & E-BIKE SAFETY REMINDER

We’ve had an increase in concerns about unsafe riding on city streets — especially kids not stopping at signs or watching for traffic and pedestrians.

We get it… scooters and e-bikes are fun. But they also come with real risks when used around vehicles.

👉 Parents — this starts at home.
A quick conversation can make a big difference

✔️ Let’s talk about the basics:

Stop at stop signs & intersections
Watch for cars at ALL times
Wear a helmet
Stay alert — no headphones or distractions
Be visible if riding in the evening
⚠️ A big one we need help with:
Avoid busy streets.
Use side streets and, if necessary, alleys.

🚫 Sidewalks are NOT permitted for scooters or bikes — they create safety issues for pedestrians.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ 🚨

This is a message an officer received today and is NOT legitimate. Thank you Officer Elliott!

It claims to be from a Kansas court and threatens enforcement action, but it’s a phishing scam designed to get you to scan the QR code or send money.

⚠️ Red flags:

• Random phone number (courts do NOT text you like this)

• Urgent threats (“final notice,” “immediate action required”)

• QR code for payment

• Generic case info that may not even apply to you

👉 Important reminder:

Courts in Kansas do NOT notify you of warrants, tickets, or enforcement actions via text message with payment links or QR codes.

❌ Do NOT scan the QR code

❌ Do NOT click any links

❌ Do NOT send money

If you ever have concerns about a ticket or court case, contact the court directly using a verified phone number.

The Caldwell Police Department is implementing a voluntary security camera registration program to assist with criminal investigations.

Security cameras frequently capture valuable evidence; however, this information may not be utilized if camera owners are unaware of incidents occurring nearby. By registering camera locations, officers can more efficiently identify potential sources of video evidence and contact owners when appropriate.

This registry will be maintained solely for internal departmental use and will not be made available to the public. Registered participants will only be contacted in the event of an incident occurring within the vicinity of their camera system.

Community participation is encouraged to enhance public safety and investigative effectiveness.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CITY OF CALDWELL POLICE DEPARTMENT ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING DISCOVERY OF UNKNOWN DEVICES

CALDWELL, KANSAS – December 06, 2025 – The Caldwell Police Department is providing an update following an incident earlier today concerning the discovery of multiple unknown devices within the city limits.

At approximately 8:33 a.m. on Saturday, December 06, 2025, Caldwell Police Officers were alerted to the presence of a suspicious, unknown device located in the vicinity of the 100 block of South Main Avenue. In the interest of public safety, this discovery necessitated the immediate, short-term closure of the surrounding roadways to allow emergency personnel to assess the situation without risk to citizens.

Due to the critical nature of the device and the potential for it to be explosive, the Caldwell Police Department promptly initiated a multi-agency response. Personnel from several key public safety and investigative organizations were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist in the investigation and rendering the area safe. These assisting agencies included:

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office

The Wichita Police Department (WPD) Bomb Squad

The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF)

Caldwell Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Caldwell Fire Department

The highly trained technicians of the Wichita Police Department Bomb Squad played a crucial role. They were able to successfully assess the initial device located on South Main Avenue and safely neutralize it, thereby making the device secure for collection and further forensic examination.

During the ongoing response and investigation in the area, two additional, similar devices were subsequently located and collected by law enforcement. These devices were found at separate locations within Caldwell: one in the 100 block of South Chisholm Avenue and the other in the 00 block of North Arapahoe. All devices have been secured as evidence.

This remains an active and open joint investigation. The Caldwell Police Department is diligently working with its partners to determine the nature of these devices, the motivation behind their placement, and to identify the individual or individuals responsible.

The Caldwell Police Department urges all residents and business owners to assist in this investigation. We ask that you thoroughly review any home or business surveillance cameras for footage captured today or in the preceding hours. Please report any suspicious activity, individuals, vehicles, or sounds you may observe or have recorded in or around the affected areas.

Anyone with any information regarding the devices, their placement, or any associated suspicious activity is strongly encouraged to contact 911 immediately.

The Caldwell Police Department extends its sincere gratitude to all the assisting agencies for their rapid response and specialized expertise, which ensured the safety of the community throughout this complex event.
