Lithium battery fires are getting more common with the increasing use of them.

A typical ABC extinguisher is not suited for these.

Use a Class D extinguisher for lithium-metal fires. For lithium-ion (like in vapes or phones), a standard ABC dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher can suppress flames but may not stop the internal thermal runaway.

Dont forgot. As a business, its your job to look at the extinguisher monthly and verify its still charged and ready to go.

The service tags have a spot on the back to initial each month that you do it.

This is actually not just a recommendation, its a requirement by the Fire Code.

The more you know......

Over the last 2 years since starting this business i have noticed that there has been roughly 12 different extinguisher companies that have traveled to Harney County to service extinguishers.

Most of these along with other specialized businesses such as hood cleaning, fire alarm companies, sprinkler companies, travel from at least 2 hours to get here. Some have traveled 5 hours.

Those travel times and costs are then passed on to you as the customer.

Im my experience, Harney County takes to heart the meaning of shop local, use local and supporting each other.

I am thankful for the business I have received and for the businesses that are here that I can support also.

Toolbox Tuesday Time

Fire season is officially upon us with a current fire in the Diamond Swamp area.

Things to be thinking about...

Do you have a plan in the event of a fire?

Do you have a defensible space to protect your home?

Is your insurance adequate?

Do you have a fire extinguisher to extinguish small fires?

Dont wait until its to late. Be proactive and make sure you limit your risk due to fire.

Annually commercial businesses are required by code to have your fire extinguishers serviced by a qualified person

But, did you know as a business owner or manager that you are required by code to inspect your fire extinguishers monthly. On the back of the service tag is the location to sign off that it has been looked at.

What do you look for?

That the gauge is in the green.
Tamper seal is in place holding the pull pin.
Is it obstructed.
Any damage.

Whew! March was a busy month. Services expanding, service range expanding. Thanks to all that have allowed me to provide services to you.

Thought I would explain what an annual service entails.

1) Examining the extinguisher for damage.
2) Make sure hose isn't obstructed.
3) Verify valve assembly isn't obstructed.
4) Verify weight is within limits.
5) Make sure gauge is in the green.
7) Verify date of manufacture and if its due for a 6-year maintenance or a 12 year hydro test.
8) Add a new tag and tamper seal.

Have questions please contact me.

Recently I was contacted in regards to someone going door to door selling fire extinguishers.

I just want to make sure you do your due diligence. Dont fall to pressured sales tactics.

Make sure you look into the company.

Verify if the extinguisher is either Underwriters Labratories listed or have an approval stamp such as Factory Mutual.

These extinguishers may not be code compliant for commercial occupancies, vehicles or wildland fire compliance.

Lastly, no portable fire extinguisher should cost $1200.00.

Make educated decisions based on your needs.

Be safe, be smart!
