Long but informative and important!

Souls to the Polls is a civic engagement tradition rooted in the Black church, where congregations organize group trips to polling places often after Sunday services to encourage voter participation. The tradition grew stronger during the Civil Rights Movement, when African Americans faced widespread voter suppression through literacy tests, poll taxes, and intimidation.
These barriers remained in place until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed discriminatory voting practices. Earlier, in 1957, churches and civil rights groups organized the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, D.C., marking the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and calling for stronger federal voting protections. Events like this reinforced the central role of Black churches in political mobilization.
From this history, Souls to the Polls became a powerful symbol of faith, unity, and civic participation.
However, in Pender County, the tradition no longer takes place in the same way because the county decided to end Sunday early voting. Since Souls to the Polls traditionally centers around Sunday church services followed by group voting, the removal of Sunday voting limits the practice locally. Thank you NAACP New Hanover County Branch for carrying on the tradition

Today the Pender Branch of the NAACP hosted a nonpartisan candidate forum. It was great to hear from the candidates who took time out of their busy schedules to share their plans and vision for our community. Thank you to every candidate who stayed until the end, and to the community members who came out to listen, engage, and ask thoughtful questions.
