Ulysses S. Grant was a fascinating and, in my estimation, underrated American. His tenacity in battle, his humility and magnanimity to a defeated enemy are remarkable. My son and I visited the cottage where he penned his memoirs deep in the Adirondack Mountains, Mount McGregor. You can almost feel his presence as you stand on the porch near the spot where he sat writing his memoirs with pencil and paper, battling time and unrelenting pain to record for posterity and for the financial survival of his beloved Julia the summary of his life.

This display, at the Fredericksburg museum in Virginia, brings home in a powerful way the vast numbers of killed and wounded we read about in battle histories were men with families who loved, were loved, and whose loss created an incalculable torrent of mourning and loss.

Last year my wife and I spent an incredibly impactful long weekend touring the battlefields of Gettysburg. We walked the site where Joshua Chamberlain and his men made their courageous stand. Some years earlier, we’d visited the Civil War Museum in Appomattox and viewed a pair of his boots on display.

Ulysses S. Grant’s account of the surrender of Appomattox is simply but elegantly recorded in his memoirs - one of the most engaging works of American literature. He describes his modest mode of dress as opposed to that of Robert E. Lee at the moment of his arrival atop his steed Traveller. A joy to read and reread.

The beautifully crafted and ornate sword worn by Robert E. Lee at the surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox - an object of legend as noted in the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. Lee can be seen wearing this sword in the image behind the object. Another incredible witness to history you could stand so close as to nearly touch.

Another powerful momento of such a costly and bloody conflict brings into focus its most human and vulnerable aspects: a child’s doll, the ‘silent witness’ to the surrender at Appomattox.

There’s something awe-inspiring to be in the presence of a witness to history, and far more so a participant in events that changed the course of our country and our world. This beautifully crafted coronet bore witness to such events. on display at the Civil War Museum at Appomattox, Virginia.

These pictures aren’t the best, but the hero (one of them anyway) of the fighting on Little Roundtop at the Battle of Gettysburg was Colonel Chamberlain, played brilliantly by actor Jeff Daniel’s in the epic film of the same name. On display at the museum in Appomattox, Virginia.

Miraculously, Charles Minnigerode survived the bullet wound - a huge .58 caliber round struck him in the back and exited his chest just below his heart. In the previous post, it stated a military doctor removed the bullet - perhaps it hadn’t fully exited and was just below his skin. Would be very interested to know more. Either way, an absolutely amazing story.
