Thanks to my great friend Supervisor Cameron Gilliam for elevating this important matter to VDOTs attention. It’s been past due the state highway department address this truly deadly intersection. Glad the Board has this on their radar!

Country roads make Buckingham residents feel right at home, including 70-year-olds Shelton and Margaret Johnson, who’ve lived in the rural county west of Richmond all their lives.

50 years ago! The current Board of Supervisors has invested in the restoration of the current courthouse, including the older portion. Black Mold has been a problem for some time due to water build up and water drainage.

🚨 There are two bills in the Virginia General Assembly that are of concern to Rural Virginia and to me. They raise red flags and remove local control from governing boards.

The first would require permits for hunting with dogs. I oppose this measure. I’ll address the second soon.

One of the rules of the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance’s dog hunting owner’s code of ethics states, “I will provide proper care for my dog, including food, water, medical care and shelter, and will firmly assist other hunting dog owners to do the same.”

Again, as I have said in the past, I say the majority of hunters in Buckingham, Cumberland or Prince Edward are ethical. Don’t let a few bad actors from out of town, or who live here in our community, represent the entire hunting population. They don’t represent me and the hunters I know and represented when I was on the Board of Supervisors.

I encourage you to attend the Monday, Feb. 12 Buckingham Board of Supervisors meeting at 6 pm if you share my opposition to this matter.

https://www.wvtf.org/news/2024-01-30/in-virginia-permitless-hound-hunting-may-become-a-thing-of-the-past?_amp=true

“The permit would be required for any person who uses dogs to hunt or chase any game, including rabbit, deer and bear. The budget amendments state DWR shall have “minimally restricted” permit requirements and the permit be designed to “foster an atmosphere of voluntary compliance.”

Virginia laws that allow dog hunters to release their animals along state roads, and go onto private land without permission, have become a burden to landowners as more folks move to rural parts of the state.

Being elected to the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors — representing the Maysville District — has been one of the highest honors of my life.

A great deal of value has been added to my life from this role, namely because of the people I have met, happily agreed and vehemently disagreed with, and worked alongside, in addition to the learned experiences I have encountered. They have made me a better person.

I’ve truly enjoyed working with each of the six of you who sit alongside me as well. I’ve learned from you, grown because of you, and even forged friendships that I never thought could be. I

And that, my dear colleagues, is something that should be celebrated. We need to be reminded to always remember to put people over politics, and that is what we have done in the time I have served.

Beyond that, we’ve connected more people to the internet, protected residents from COVID-19, invested in small businesses, supported our employees, cleaned up our roadways, approved new healthcare opportunities, fostered new job creation, and, near and dear to me, lifted up our public schools.

Speaking of employees, I would be remiss to not highlight our amazing staff. They are truly what makes this Board and County Government operate, delivering services and programs to our citizens.

In closing, I return to the friendships I have made. You all have helped me celebrate the good times, and get through the bad, and, in the meantime, enjoy life, alongside my beautiful partner, Rachael who is my biggest supporter.

I wish you all much success in the future.
