As a safety reminder, before you put a shovel in the ground, use the free Colorado 811 services. You can call 811 (dial 811 and press call), or use their online submission, and once all the utilities are marked (usually three business days), you can start digging. The last thing you want is to puncture a gas or water line, cut an electric line, or sever a phone or internet line; these incidents have demonstrated to be very inconvenient, expensive, and even fatal. Colorado 811 (which is a non-profit organization) states it this way, "Practicing safe digging and excavation starts with contacting Colorado 811. Whether you’re a homeowner wanting to refresh your yard or a professional excavator, you need to know what’s below! Colorado 811 makes it easy for homeowners and professionals who are going to excavate do so safely by submitting a utility locating ticket request online, or call 811 before you dig. Either way, you can have the underground cables, wires and utilities marked before you begin excavating so that you are safe and do not destroy important underground facilities." Homeowner or contractor, please make sure this is a standard part of your pre-work process.

01/02/2025

As of January 1st, 2025, the City of Brush! Community Development Department has implemented a new credentialing process for all contractors working within City limits. This initiative aims to enhance the consistency and quality of building code compliance in our community.

All contractors must complete the “City of Brush! Credential Exam” or submit proof of an ICC certificate to continue working within the City. This will need to be done as part of the renewal of credentials for existing contractors, and for new contractors applying for credentials.

To access exam materials:

- Log in to your MyGov account (or create an account if first time)
- Click “Credentials tab”
- Select Credential Type (Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV, Class V) and once the credential type is selected you will be able to access, download, and print the testing materials required for the new credentialing process.
- Please return the completed exam or ICC certificate to the Community Development Department as part of the new credential process.

Alternatively, materials are available in-person at the Community Development Department located at 304 Clayton Street, and on our website.

Why this change? The new process is designed to ensure that all construction projects meet the highest standards of safety and quality, benefiting both contractors and residents.

We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to maintaining the standards that make our community a great place to live and work.

For more information, please contact the Community Development Department at 970-842-5002 or in-person at 304 Clayton Street.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe, and Keep Building!

In 2025, renewing credentials for contractors will require testing. The below message was emailed out to all our licensed contractors in October:

Contractors in the City of Brush!,
To increase the consistency of the quality of building code compliance provided to our community, the City of Brush! will be requiring all contractors doing work within City limits to take the “City of Brush! Credential Exam” beginning in January 2025. When renewing your license at the City of Brush! you will be issued a test consisting of a series of multiple-choice questions based on the trades and services you provide. We will provide a study guide to help all contractors reference code sections from the 2018 International Residential Code book that will be accessible prior to and during testing. Contractors will still be required to renew their credential every year but will only need to test every three years, or any time a new code edition is adopted by the City. If a contractor is already certified through the International Code Council (Class A license, Class B license, etc.) for the trades they will be doing work for, no test will be required, only a submission of the license to the City.
Additional communication will be provided in coming weeks regarding further details, including a FAQ, but feel free to contact our office with any questions at 970.842.5002, or stop in at 304 Clayton Street.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in providing quality work to our community.

10/02/2024

For anyone looking at getting solar panels on their roof, make sure the company does a structural assessment of the roof system to ensure it can adequately support the additional weight of the panels, especially on older homes and rooftops with less roof pitch.
Existing roof system + solar panels + snow load = weight that needs to be rightly considered (as well as wind load).

R324.4.1 Structural Requirements of 2018 International Residential Code states:
Rooftop-mounted photovoltaic panel systems shall be designed to structurally support the system and withstand applicable gravity loads in accordance with Chapter 3. The roof on which these systems are installed shall be designed and constructed to support the loads imposed by such systems in accordance with Chapter 8.

A general fyi when putting on a new roof in colder temperatures is that once the temperature get below about 45 degrees, the shingles will not adhere and seal nearly as well (and the colder it gets - not at all). This could leave you with shingles laying all over your and your neighbor's yard when the wind comes; which also means your roof won't have the barrier it needs for the winter elements.
Depending on the temperature, it could take a few hours (a really hot day), to a couple of weeks for them to seal well. However, on a sunny day when the the temperatures are cold, shingles are able to absorb the heat of the sun and still seal.
