NEXT WEEK! On the evening of October 27, artist Nikki Kramer will be holding a writing prompt forum. The theme of this event will be Autonomy. In this space, there will be a provided sequence of writing prompts; you may answer these prompts in whichever form of writing you desire: a poem, a fictional story, a play, a journal entry, etc. You will have an allocated amount of time to answer the prompts, then we will share and discuss.

You are not obligated to share, but this will be a safe and supported space where your writing will not be judged. If you have a notebook or paper and a writing utensil, please bring these items with you, if not, we will have supplies provided.

SATURDAY! One year ago, a conversation began.

At the intersection of Black fashion history and cultural institutions, particularly those in GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) emerged a community of thinkers, creators, designers, archivists, historians and the like. Asking a simple, yet powerful question: Who is preserving Black fashion history, and how?

Today? The conversation continues, but this time centering the women who have always been at its heart. To commemorate the one-year anniversary of BKLYN Designs, “Adorned and Archived: Women in GLAM” is a celebration of the extraordinary women working at the junction of Black fashion, cultural preservation and institutional change.

From the curator protecting garments in temperature-controlled archives to the journalist making fashion history accessible; the librarian building community collections down to the museum educator developing programming for underprivileged communities. These women not only engage in the work of preservation, they also ensure that our history survives to reach the people who need it the most.

Join us for an evening of celebration, celebration and community as we reflect on the one year of the Library for Arts & Culture’s premiere fashion conversation. Exploring how GLAM institutions preserve, amplify and center Black fashion narratives. Celebrating the women who continuously thread this work together across galleries, libraries, archives, and museums.

FRIDAY! I’ve Arted is a new, live game show, rooted in improvisation and meant to celebrate the joy of art! Three audience members are invited on-stage to draw an original piece of art based on a prompt we receive that night. While they work, I’ve Arted’s host will interview three established storytellers from the worlds of literature, theatre, standup comedy, and more about their relationship to art. Finally, the storytellers will have a few moments to come up with the story of one of the pieces and its title, so we as an audience can vote on the best story. Fun, silly, and meant to remove the pressure that we as adults put on ourselves to be great at everything, inviting the audience to enjoy the storytelling nature of art!

NEXT WEEK! Join Dr. Nicole Grimes, CEO and Founder of Carib Biz Network, and Ronnie Dickerson Stewart, author of Work Life Remix, for a rich conversation about work, life, optionality, and provision in an era where the old social contracts with work are shifting. Ronnie coaches, teaches, and guides leaders across the creative and tech industries who are consciously redesigning their approach to work and life.

This conversation explores what a Work Life Remix posture makes possible: capacity for what matters most and provision you can build on for the long haul. You'll leave with provocations, gems, and actual tools for the way forward!

SATURDAY! Greetings, Graphic Novel Crew! AiHGNBC is back in session!

Whether you only read Graphic Novels or haven't picked up a comic since the Sunday funnies, this club's for you! You don't have to read all texts listed below, but come ready to engage regardless. If wait times for books are long, we don't mind if you use your other library cards to procure books. We spread library love: it's the Brooklyn way. Each month's theme is decided at the prior session.

This Month's Theme: "Define Scary?"

Taking a look at some hefty tomes, if not in length, then in the weight of its words and imagery. What one person might not find scary could be another person's worst nightmare. Some are fantastical, some are historical, but most are a bit unimaginable.

Some selections:

Stuck Rubber Baby by Howard Cruse

Brain Damage by Shintaro Kago

When I Arrived at the Castle by E.M. Carroll

Incognegro by Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece

Honorable mentions

The werewolf at dusk: and other stories by David Small

Unterzakhn by Leela Corman
