The Federation of Italian-American Organizations and the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office hosted Brooklyn’s Italian Heritage & Culture Proclamation Ceremony at Il Centro in Bath Beach on Wednesday evening. Carlo Scissura, Master of Ceremonies, did an amazing job highlighting the success of the Italian American community and their love of the American Dream. I was represented by my Director of Community Affairs, Richie Barsamian, who joined the celebration. The ceremony included music from I.S. 201, the Madeleine Brennan School, and a dance performance by the students of P.S. 112. Congratulations to the honorees and a big thank you to everyone who worked so hard and made this wonderful event possible.

I had the pleasure of attending the Town Hall Meeting for PS 188, bringing parents, educators, and community members together for an open and meaningful conversation about the education and future of our scholars. We discussed important issues impacting the school community, including student enrollment, academic performance and test scores, and access to technology. Thank you to District 21 Superintendent Erin Lynch-Reyes, Principal King, faculty, dedicated staff, and students for their participation and commitment to our community.

** CONEY ISLAND ASSAULT **

At approximately 9:15 pm on Friday, October 16th, in a parking lot located at 2819 West 12th Street, a 76-year-old man was punched in the face by an unknown male perpetrator. The perpetrator fled the scene. There are no further details at this time. The NYPD investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the attacker. I was very proud to participate in Wolfson’s Martial Arts Growing Heart event Sunday afternoon on the Coney Island Boardwalk. I join the entire community in extending my profound appreciation to Anatoly Volfson, who has dedicated so much energy and unwavering compassion to engage children and young adults with autism through his martial arts academy and public events. We must embrace those around us who are neurodiverse and continue to break down barriers to inclusion. Every individual is a beautiful part of our world and deserves to be treated like a member of our family. Thank you to the families and friends who joined us and thank you to my dear friend Anatoly.

My office was honored to be represented at the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk hosted by JCCGCI Trauma and RecoveryCenter. I was represented by my Director of Constituent Affairs, Brigitte Purvis-Williams. This heartfelt event brought the community together to raise awareness, support those impacted by breast cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember loved ones. I commend the JCCGCI Trauma and Recovery Center for bringing people together in support of this important cause. Every step brings us closer to a healthier, stronger community.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend, Nadine Dabney. She dedicated many years of service to the NYS Assembly, proudly serving the constituents of the 46th District. Words cannot express the depth of this loss. My heartfelt prayers, love, and deepest condolences go out to the Dabney family. May God comfort and strengthen them during this difficult time.

I had the privilege of meeting with the Honorable Scott Turner, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, on Thursday evening. Secretary Turner is an extraordinary individual with a long list of accomplishments including nine seasons in the NFL, four years in the Texas State Legislature, many years of corporate leadership, and his work as a Baptist Pastor. In addition, this is his second role serving in the President’s Administration. He is focused on supporting and expanding home ownership and partnering with faith-based organizations and the nonprofit community to accomplish the mission. Thank you, Secretary Turner, for your time and courtesy as we shared a conversation about housing affordability and increasing home ownership in my Assembly District.
