MEET THE TEAM MONDAY: SERGEANT JAMES KOCH
Sergeant James Koch began his law enforcement career with a smaller Tulsa-area agency in July 2010 before joining the Broken Arrow Police Department in 2014.
After spending two years in patrol, Sergeant Koch moved to what is now the Public Relations Unit, where he served as BAPD’s first dedicated uniformed Public Information Officer from 2016 to 2019. He later returned to patrol and was promoted to Sergeant in July 2021.
Throughout his time with BAPD, Sergeant Koch has worked 1st, 2nd and 4th shifts, with most of his career spent on 1st shift. He currently serves as a member of the Honor Guard and Special Operations Team, as well as the department’s Law Enforcement Driving Training instructor cadre. He has also served on the Incident Support Team and Special Response Team.
As a former Field Training Officer, Sergeant Koch now serves as one of the department’s Field Training Supervisors, helping guide and develop new officers. He is also a recipient of the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award, a leadership program designed to prepare future leaders in law enforcement.
Sergeant Koch’s recognitions include one Life Saving Award, one Chief’s Award, four Chief’s Meritorious Unit Awards, two Department Commendations and three Letters of Commendation.
Outside of work, Sergeant Koch enjoys outdoor cooking and uses charcoal exclusively, even during the colder months. He also spends time playing sports with his sons, working in the yard, detailing vehicles and cutting grass. He says he enjoys seeing the value and beauty in a job done correctly.
One final fact about Sergeant Koch: he loves to sing. He admits he may not be the best at it, but that has never stopped him!
