Bear Safety Reminder for Bridgeport Residents

The Bridgeport Police Department has been made aware of a young black bear recently spotted in the Rosewood area.

While seeing wildlife can be exciting, bears are often attracted to neighborhoods by easy food sources. Residents can help keep both people and wildlife safe by taking a few simple precautions:

✅ Secure trash containers and avoid leaving garbage out overnight.

✅ Remove bird feeders while bears are active in the area.

✅ Keep pet food, treats, and water bowls indoors, especially at night.

✅ Clean outdoor grills and food preparation areas after each use.

If you encounter a bear:

• Stay calm and give it plenty of space.
• Do not approach, feed, or follow the animal.
• Keep children and pets indoors if a bear is nearby.
• Report concerning bear activity to local authorities or the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

By working together to eliminate food sources, we can encourage bears to move through the area and return to their natural habitat.

🚔 TRAFFIC ADVISORY – FALLEN STARS MEMORIAL 5K 🚔

The Bridgeport Police Department would like to remind motorists that the Derek Hotsinpiller Fallen Stars Memorial 5K will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

During the event, motorists should expect temporary road closures and traffic detours along the race route. Areas affected include:

• Johnson Avenue (near the schools)
• Water Street
• Virginia Avenue
• Worthington Drive
• Long Street
• Hall Street

We encourage motorists to avoid these areas during the race whenever possible to help prevent delays and ensure the safety of participants, volunteers, and spectators.

🚨 TRAFFIC ADVISORY – SUMMER KICKOFF EVENT 🚨

Motorists are advised to expect traffic delays and detours in the City of Bridgeport on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM due to the Summer Kickoff event.

🚧 US Route 50 (Main Street) will be closed between Virginia Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue during the event.

👮 Officers will be directing traffic, and detour signs will be posted throughout the area.

To avoid delays, please plan ahead and consider using alternate routes during these hours.
