Happy Black History Month! This month we’re honoring the black advocates and survivors who paved the way in the anti-sexual violence movement, starting with Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama. On December 1, 1955 she made history by becoming the face of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, but this wasn’t the only thing she did to advance civil rights. Throughout her career, she also advocated and fundraised for black survivors of sexual assault to seek justice.

During her time with the NAACP, Parks supported victim-survivor Recy Taylor, who spoke out against the six armed white men who sexually assaulted her in 1944. Outraged that none of Taylor’s assailants were convicted for their crimes, Parks spearheaded the creation of the Alabama Committee for Equal Justice for Mrs. Recy Taylor which turned into a nation-wide movement in support of Taylor.

Parks also worked with other survivors including Joan Little. In 1974, Little was charged with first-degree murder after she stabbed a prison guard who sexually assaulted her. When Parks heard about her case, she co-founded the Joan Little Defense Committee in Detroit, Michigan and supported Little in becoming the first woman in American history to be acquitted of murder on the grounds of self-defense against sexual violence.

These are just a few examples of the amazing work Parks did for both the civil rights and anti-sexual violence movements. Black women have always been leading the way in the fight for justice and safety for all. We’ll continue sharing these powerful stories throughout the month and hope that they resonate with you far beyond February 29.

Proudly Celebrating 75 Years of Service to Women and Girls

On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Soroptimist International of Greater Bremerton Area (SIGB) will celebrate 75 years of service to women and girls at a special brunch buffet at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club in Bremerton. The event kicks off at 10:00 a.m.

SIGB was chartered by the Soroptimist International of Seattle and Soroptimist International of Tacoma on July 1, 1944 and became the 185th club in the American Federation and the 25th club in the Northwestern Region. A special dinner commemorating the club's charter and installation of its first officers was held June 30, 1944 at Raus Chicken Dinner Inn in Downtown Bremerton.

The mission of Soroptimist is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Since its inception in 1944, SIGB has successfully been meeting that mission right here in Kitsap County.

We hope you’ll join us for this very special occasion!
