Congratulations to Parris S. Lourenco, Senior Assistant General Counsel with the Office of the Comptroller, on her election to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of Boston Women in Public Finance. Parris will serve through December 31, 2029.

Boston Women in Public Finance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and advancing women in the public finance industry across Greater Boston through educational programming, networking opportunities, and professional development.

It’s Public Service Recognition Week, and we’re proud to highlight John Newell, who has dedicated more than 40 years to serving the Commonwealth.

John began his career as an auditor with the Department of Public Works (now MassDOT), where he quickly saw how strong oversight helps guard against fraud, waste, and abuse. That early experience shaped a career defined by one principle: fairness.

Whether ensuring accurate tax reporting at the Department of Revenue or overseeing payments and financial reporting at the Office of the Comptroller for nearly 35 years, John has remained committed to doing what’s right—for both the Commonwealth and its residents.

Reflecting on his career, John says, “I am proud of my public service. Through the years I have helped thousands of people—and that gives me a good feeling.”

Comptroller of the Commonwealth William McNamara has announced the filing of the Commonwealth’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for Fiscal Year 2025, the period that ended June 30, 2025. Said Comptroller William McNamara, “The Annual Comprehensive Financial Report is the single most important financial statement that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is required to produce annually. I am fortunate to serve with Assistant Comptroller & Chief Financial Reporting Officer Pauline Lieu and the Statewide Financial Reporting Team, Assistant Comptroller & Chief Accounting Officer Kristin Lacroix and the Statewide General Accounting Team, and Senior Advisor Howard Merkowitz. Together with the devoted financial staff at organizations throughout the Commonwealth, their collaboration has resulted in an accurate and detailed look at state finance that is of immeasurable value to the people of the Commonwealth.”

Today, we celebrate Cathy Hunter, Program Coordinator II for the Statewide Financial Reporting Team. Since joining us in 1992, Cathy has been a steady and essential presence—supporting financial reporting processes, maintaining critical documentation and systems, and ensuring teams and departments have the information they need to succeed.

From helping implement new tools like Workiva and SharePoint to supporting major efforts like the digitization of decades of financial records, Cathy’s work has strengthened how our office operates and collaborates.

What stands out most is her willingness to support any project, across any team, and her deep commitment to the people she works with every day.
