Join us Sat. June 20 for "TCB - The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing", the new documentary that explores the life and legacy of writer and cultural worker Toni Cade Bambara.

Her groundbreaking literary works, including The Black Woman (1970), Gorilla, My Love (1972), and The Salt Eaters (1980), helped define Black Arts and feminist movements through the present day.

The documentary film is structured as a series of lessons on cultural organizing, gleaned from Bambara's life through archival footage and shared by her friends, colleagues and students through personal testimonies.

We'll be outdoors for this S.C. premiere done at and in conjunction with ; we'll be having a pre-screening discussion on art and activism with locals from both disciplines, as well as an extra-special video intro by one of the notables (a local!) who appears in the film!

This is the perfect way to celebrate Juneteenth this year.

On June 18th in Baltimore, join us for VOICES OF THE GODS - presented in remastered 2K - the 1985 documentary that explores the preservation of Yoruba and other West African religious traditions among descendants of enslaved Africans here in the USA. The film focuses on how these belief systems were preserved within the African diaspora despite centuries of suppression and misunderstanding.

A significant portion of the documentary was filmed at Oyotunji African Village, a Yoruba-inspired community in South Carolina that has played an important role in reviving traditional African religious practices in the U.S.

“Voices…” is notable because it presents African spiritual traditions from the perspective of practitioners themselves and critiques how mainstream American media historically portrayed religions such as Vodun, Yoruba religion, and related traditions.

But don’t believe us…get a peek through this trailer and in-person on June 18th at the SNF Parkway Theatre in Baltimore. Tix available at https://snfparkway.org/ (and via our bio link) and director Al Santana will be present alongside some special guests.

Presented by The Luminal Theater alongside the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute () and our venue/screening partners The SNF Parkway Theatre, and preceded by Baltimore filmmaker Sharayna Ashanti’s BIRTH OF REMEMBRANCE.

Happy heavenly birthday to Malcolm X, our, as Ossie Davis eloquently put, "Black shining prince" of knowledge and resistance and inspiration. Malcolm X embodies so much of what The Luminal was founded on - independent mind, thought, and spirit, and using media tools - especially of our own crafting - to do so.

Spike Lee did this skillfully and beautifully in his starring 1992 biopic MALCOLM X. Seeing it, especially on opening day, but anytime after and through various mediums, is a life- altering experience, so enjoy the images you see here, filmed expertly of course by the great Ernest Dickerson.

Angela Bassett shines here as Betty Shabazz, Al Freeman is masterful as Elijah Muhammad, and this is where most of us were introduced to the great Delroy Lindo.

Malcolm, your spirit lives forever!

The BLK Docs Film Festival (BDFF) is our new documentary centered film festival concentrating on telling the Black American story, with primary thematic elements embodying the "Spirit of '76" and its ideals of self-determination and liberty.

BDFF takes place October 22-24, 2026 in the documentary rich town of Durham, NC.

Despite having the highest concentration of Black people in the United States, the American South is often disregarded as being the actual voice of Black Americans. To correct this, BDFF will feature three (3) days of:

- documentary film screenings of feature-length and short films with a special slate of screenings from new/emerging documentarians
- master classes in Impact Producing and workshops in crafting historical documentaries, best practices in archiving cinema & restoration
- vendor opportunities for filmmaker-centered technology and organizations
- meetups for filmmakers, curators/exhibitors, and funders to network, hosted by select film community stakeholders

Celebrate the 30th anniversary THE WATERMELON WOMAN, Cheryl Dunye's breakthrough film, with our friends The Third Room on June 11.

The Watermelon Woman follows Cheryl, a young Black le***an filmmaker in Philadelphia, who becomes obsessed with a forgotten actress from 1930s race films — a woman credited only as "the Watermelon Woman." What starts as a search for a name becomes something bigger: a meditation on who gets to be remembered, who tells our stories, and what it means to find yourself in history that was never written down for you.

Thirty years later, still necessary. The night includes a post-film mixer.

$23 per ticket. Half supports Maysles Documentary Center. Half goes directly to The Third Room.

This is a Q***r, Black & POC-centered event. All are welcome.

📍 Maysles Documentary Center — 343 Lenox Ave, Harlem, NY
