When the kids are away, your first responders will train! On September 4th, Union County Schools had an online learning day. Union County’s first responders took advantage of the empty schools to train on Active Threat response. This was a great opportunity for the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Fire Department, Union County Schools Police Department, and the Union County School System to get together and train as a team.

The Sheriff’s Office’s immediate response to any active shooter within our school system will be to IMMEDIATELY enter the building and eliminate the threat. All deputies have been trained to drive towards the threat and eliminate that threat first and foremost. This training focused on what our response would be after that threat has been eliminated or contained. First responders do not know in the immediate aftermath of an active shooter event if there are other threats. Also, the school system will remain locked down. In the meantime, first responders have to be able to now enter the school and triage injuries.

Your Union County Fire Department has been great when it comes to training and being prepared to enter the school with law enforcement to address injuries as quickly as possible. After the threat has been eliminated or contained, Fire Department personnel will enter the building alongside law enforcement to begin the triage and medical support. Law enforcement will provide an es**rt to fire personnel to keep them safe, while they are tending to our loved ones who might have possible injuries.

This is the perfect example of your County Departments working hand-in-hand to accomplish the mission of protecting and serving our community. This kind of training gives us the opportunity to identify the different priorities in a situation such as this, and make sure everyone is on the same page during what would be a very chaotic and emotional scene. It allows law enforcement, fire personnel, and the school system to discuss what their protocols would be in this type of situation, so all of the other personnel know exactly what to expect out of each agency. The more we can prepare for incidents such as these, the quicker we can respond and take action if, God forbid, a tragedy such as this ever befell our community. We are very blessed to live in this community where all of us can come together and work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.

Today is a solemn day for the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Fifteen years ago today, one of our very own, Deputy Derrick Whittle, was responding to a domestic disturbance involving a weapon when his patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Deputy Whittle was transported to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga where he succumbed to his injuries on September 18, 2011. Deputy Whittle left behind a wife, two children, and his loving parents. Deputy Whittle died trying to help someone that day. We are eternally grateful for his dedication and service to his community. In honor of Deputy Whittle, his badge number #221 has been permanently retired at the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Please join us in remembering Deputy Whittle and the loved ones that he left behind. Please lift his family, loved ones, and former co-workers up in prayer as this will always remain a difficult time of year for them. Thank you Deputy Whittle for your sacrifice to our community!

Twenty-five years ago today, the world changed. We promised we would never forget, and we will not. For those that were alive during this tragic day, we remember vividly the fear and uncertainty of what would come next. For those not alive, your lives have still been affected by what was the largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

For those that were alive during that time, we remember waking up that morning like any other morning. We remember going about our activities like any normal day. We remember hearing the news that a plane had struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. We remember the confusion asking ourselves if this was an accident or an act of terrorism. We remember that confusion going away 17 minutes later when the second plane hit the South Tower. We remember where we were, what we were doing, how we felt. We remember the uncertainty as we heard more reports of other planes that had crashed into the Pentagon and into a field in Pennsylvania. We remember wondering how many more planes there could be. We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day. We remember the courageous actions of hundreds of first responders that entered into buildings knowing that they might not make it out alive. Many of them didn't. We remember the lives lost since then due to lingering effects of that day. WE. REMEMBER.

In a world that often feels divided, please join us in solemn remembrance for a day that changed our world. Please join us in remembering those innocent lives lost that day, and the heroes that did everything they could to help those that were experiencing the worst day of their lives.

Our days will continue moving forward, and we will continue to remember. One thing that often gets overlooked with any 9/11 Remembrance is taking the time not only to reflect on the lives lost on 9/11, but remembering 9/12. As we join today in honoring the lives lost during our most tragic of times, we ask you to also remember 9/12. For on 9/12, Americans came together as a country to support and uplift each other like we have not seen since. We need that. Now more than ever. In a world that often feels so divided, let us take the time to remember those lives lost, and honor them moving forward.

We remember. And we will never forget.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Don’t Fall for the “Call This Number” Pop-Up! 🚨

The Union County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents about a common scam involving pop-up messages on computers, tablets, and other devices.

You may see a warning claiming that your computer has been infected with a virus, hacked, or compromised. The message may appear very convincing and often instructs you to call a specific phone number immediately for technical support.

⚠️ DON’T CALL THE NUMBER!

These pop-ups are commonly used by scammers to convince you that there is an emergency with your device. Once you call, the scammer may pretend to be a representative from Microsoft, Apple, your internet provider, or another legitimate company. They may then attempt to:

• Gain remote access to your computer
• Steal passwords or personal information
• Obtain banking or credit card information
• Convince you to purchase unnecessary software or services
• Claim you owe money to fix your computer
• Install malicious software on your device

🛑 What should you do?

1️⃣ Don’t call the number displayed in the pop-up.
Legitimate technology companies generally do not use random pop-ups to demand that you call a phone number immediately.

2️⃣ Don’t give anyone remote access to your computer.
Never allow an unsolicited caller to control your device.

3️⃣ Don’t provide personal or financial information.
Never give passwords, Social Security numbers, banking information, or payment information to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.

4️⃣ Close the pop-up.
If you cannot close it normally, close the browser or restart your computer. Do not click on suspicious links or buttons within the warning.

5️⃣ If you're concerned, contact the company directly.
Use a phone number or website that you know is legitimate. Do not use the contact information provided in the pop-up.

6️⃣ Talk to family members and friends.
Scammers frequently target older adults and people who may be less familiar with technology. Sharing this information could help prevent someone you know from becoming a victim.

Remember: A scary message on your screen does not mean there is an emergency. Scammers use urgency and fear to get you to act before you have time to think.

If you receive a suspicious pop-up, stop, don't call, and don't give anyone access to your device.

The Union County Sheriff's Office will be hosting a FREE car seat check on September 22, 2026 at the Union County Primary School.

This event will begin at approximately 2:30pm as school is letting out. As parents pick up their children from the parent pickup line, you can exit the line and turn to the left (see attached image) where we will be set up conducting the car seat checks. The Union County Fire Department, Union County Schools Police Department, and several other agencies will be on site assisting with this event.

This will be a great time to have your child's car seat checked by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). They will be checking to make sure that the seats are properly installed, do not have any recalls, and are not expired. If any seats are found to be faulty or expired, we will have a limited number of free car seats to give to those in need.

If you cannot make it on this day, but would still like to have your child's car seat checked by a certified technician, you can call the Sheriff's Office and set up an appointment for a CPST to meet with you.

🦆 The 8th Annual Duck Derby was a great success! 🦆

Sheriff Dyer is always excited to assist with the Blairsville Police Department’s 8th Annual Duck Derby!

The Blairsville Police Department’s Duck Derby is a fantastic event that helps raise money for the Blairsville Police Department’s Shop With a Cop program, allowing local law enforcement officers to provide a special Christmas experience for children in our community.

Sheriff Dyer always loves an opportunity to get involved, support our local law enforcement partners, and give back to the community we all share.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Similar to the last detour for Ashley Circle and Hwy 515, a detour is in effect. (See attached) The west/south end of Ashley Circle will be closed. The east/north end will be open to traffic. All access to Ashley Circle must use the east/north end of the road. Please keep in mind this is a project managed by the State of Georgia and not your local County Government. 🚨 ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE 🚨

Richard Russell Highway (Highway 348) will be closed all day today due to a motor vehicle wreck involving a tractor-trailer.

Motorists need to avoid the area and use an alternate route.

Today was a great day as we got to recognize some fine men and women who went above and beyond the call of duty to save the life of another. Sheriff Dyer presented Certificates of Merit to seven of our first responders this morning at the Union County Commissioner's Meeting.

The first incident occurred on June 27th when one of our own deputies, Deputy Buck Stover, was at his residence with his wife, Kimberly, and began having a medical emergency. The Union County Fire and EMS crew responded quickly and began tending to Deputy Stover. Deputy Stover then went into full cardiac arrest. Crews from Fire and EMS were able to provide lifesaving measures to bring Deputy Stover back. Deputy Stover has fully recovered and is back to work!

This morning, Sheriff Shawn Dyer recognized the crew that showed up that day and provided lifesaving measures to Deputy Stover. Sheriff Dyer presented the crew with Union County Sheriff's Office Certificates of Merit - Lifesaving Awards. The crew was comprised of Union County Fire Lt. Travis Gibson, FF/Paramedic Kyle Mead, and FF Adam Podber; and Union General EMS Paramedic Derrick Pruitt and AEMT Amber Pruitt. We are eternally grateful for the rapid response of our Fire and EMS personnel. We are very fortunate to have such knowledgeable professionals watching over us every day!

The second incident occurred in July at a residence off Trackrock Gap Rd. A call came into the 911 Center in reference to a female that was unresponsive. Two of our deputies, Sgt. Michael Kearns and Deputy CJ Townsend, were nearby and overheard the medical call. Both Sgt. Kearns and Deputy Townsend are certified EMTs and volunteer firefighters. Even though this was a medical call, the two deputies responded without hesitation. They found the female in full cardiac arrest and unresponsive. Sgt. Kearns began CPR. Deputy Townsend carries his own Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in his patrol car. He retrieved the AED and administered a shock to the patient. The two deputies continued providing lifesaving measures until EMS arrived. They then continued assisting EMS until the patient was able to be transported.

Due to the lifesaving measures that were rapidly deployed by these two deputies, the patient regained a pulse just as EMS arrived. The patient was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition. In incidents like these, seconds are vital. These two deputies arrived on scene several minutes prior to Fire/EMS arrival and made the difference in the chances of survival for the patient. Sheriff Shawn Dyer was proud to recognize these two deputies with Certificates of Merit - Lifesaving Awards. The two deputies were also presented with Commendation Medals to be worn on their uniforms. Great job deputies! The Sheriff's Office and our community are fortunate to have such dedicated professionals that go above and beyond to serve their community and help those in need!
