🚨 SCAM ALERT – A New Variation Targeting Our Area 🚨

The Union County Sheriff's Office wants to remind everyone to remain vigilant when receiving unexpected phone calls, text messages, emails, or documents claiming to be from government agencies.

Recently, residents have reported receiving documents similar to the one pictured, which falsely claim that their Social Security Number has been suspended, that criminal charges have been filed against them, or that they must immediately contact a government office to avoid arrest or other consequences.

These documents are fraudulent and are designed to create fear and urgency in order to convince victims to provide personal information, banking information, Social Security numbers, or even send money.

⚠️ Remember:
• Government agencies do not suspend Social Security numbers.
• Legitimate law enforcement agencies do not demand money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or personal information over the phone.
• Scammers often spoof phone numbers to make calls appear legitimate.
• Never provide personal, financial, or identifying information to anyone unless you have independently verified who you are speaking with.

If you receive a call, text, email, or document like the one shown in this post, do not respond or provide any information. Instead, verify the contact information through an official government website or contact the agency directly using a known, trusted phone number.

If you believe you have been targeted by a scam or may have provided information to a scammer, please contact the Union County Sheriff's Office immediately.

📢 Please share this post to help protect your family, friends, and neighbors from becoming victims of fraud.

Joint Effort Rids Community of Trafficking Amount of Methamphetamine, Results in 3 Arrests

The Union County Sheriff’s Office continues to reach across borders (county lines and state lines) to assist other agencies for the common goal of ridding our local community of dangerous substances. This week, Investigators assigned to our Narcotics Division, assisted the Cherokee County, NC Sheriff’s Office with a narcotics investigation that resulted in the removal of over 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Agents conducted surveillance of a residence in Cherokee County, which later resulted in a traffic stop. Amanda Lee Edmondson, 44, of Murphy, was arrested on that traffic stop after deputies seized approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine. This led to a search warrant being obtained for a residence located at 7 Page Little Rd in Murphy, NC. Page Little Rd traverses both Cherokee County, NC and Union County, Ga. The residence is located on the Cherokee County side, but backs up to the Georgia side.

Union County deputies further assisted with the search warrant conducted at the residence. The search of the residence led to the seizure of trafficking quantities of methamphetamine and $1,528 in cash that is believed to be connected to the illegal drug activity. They also discovered that a juvenile was living at this residence where the illegal drug activity was taking place. Two additional arrests were made at the residence.

Amanda Mary King, 38, of Murphy, is charged with:
Felony Exposing a Child to a Controlled Substance
Felony Trafficking in Methamphetamine
Felony Maintaining a Dwelling for the Sale of Controlled Substances
Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Amanda Lee Edmondson, of Murphy, is charged with:
Felony Possession of Methamphetamine

Heather Leigh Hamby, 45, of Murphy, is charged with:
Possession of Methamphetamine
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

These kinds of arrests underscore the importance of working alongside other agencies for the common purpose of removing these dangerous drugs from our streets. Due to the transient nature of drug trafficking, today was the streets of North Carolina, but tomorrow could have seen these same drugs on our streets in Union County. We would like to thank Cherokee County, NC and all of our surrounding agencies for their role in maintaining such a good relationship that we can constantly rely on one another for assistance in removing these drugs from our communities.

All parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff Shawn Dyer announces the first annual Union County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy. The academy is open to any Union County resident who is 18 years of age or older and interested in learning more about the operations of the Sheriff’s Office and the services it provides. The academy will consist of five Thursday evening sessions held on August 6, 13, 20, and 27, and September 3, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:15 PM. Participants must commit to attending all sessions.

The purpose of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of deputies in modern law enforcement.

The goal of the program is to educate citizens on as many aspects of law enforcement as possible. Topics will include daily operations, investigations, tactics, and crime scene management. While the program will not cover each area in extensive detail, participants will leave with a solid introduction to the work performed by the Sheriff’s Office. Each section will be instructed by personnel actively assigned to that area, allowing participants the opportunity to meet and learn from a variety of Sheriff’s Office employees.

Citizens Academy applications and background check forms are available at the front desk of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Completed forms must be returned to the Sheriff’s Office before June 25, 2026. For more information or to request an emailed application, contact Eddie Henderson at [email protected].
