A new scholarship opportunity is available for eligible families of long-serving Alabama law enforcement officers.

Governor Kay Ivey signed House Bill 98—the Alabama Law Enforcement Officers’ Family Scholarship Act—into law this year. The program, administered by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, provides assistance toward tuition and mandatory fees for eligible undergraduate students attending an accredited public postsecondary vocational, technical, community, junior college, or university in Alabama.

Eligible dependents may include a natural or adopted child under age 24 or a current or surviving spouse who has not remarried. The qualifying officer must have at least 15 years of full-time service or have separated from full-time employment no more than 10 years ago, and applicants must meet the program’s Alabama residency requirements. Awards may be up to $2,500 per semester.

The law also created a new Blackout license plate to help support the scholarship fund. The Blackout Tags will be available beginning January 1, 2027. The sale of these tags will be the primary funding mechanism for the scholarship program going forward.

Please share this information with eligible family members and review the scholarship details and application information on the internet at "Alabama Law Enforcement Officers Family Scholarship."
