🐿️ Ember’s Update 🧡
We have a difficult update to share about Ember.
Last night, Ember arrived at Angel-Rose Wildlife Rehab after an incredible effort from our community to get her into care. She had fallen approximately 30 feet from a tree and was suffering from severe fly strike. By the time she arrived, she was in critical condition and her chances of survival were already dangerously low.
Unfortunately, there simply wasn’t much we could do for her at that point beyond providing supportive care, warmth, treatment, and a safe place to rest. Sometimes an animal arrives so compromised that there isn’t a treatment that can undo everything their little body has already endured.
Despite everything, Ember passed away around 11:30 PM.
She spent her final hours warm, safe, and cared for. She was not alone.
Out of the four siblings involved in this rescue, two are now continuing their rehabilitation with us. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped along the way — the finders who cared enough to get them help, everyone who shared our posts, everyone who offered transportation, and especially the person who drove a considerable distance to bring Ember to us.
This is the hardest part of wildlife rehabilitation.
Rehabbers don’t always talk about the animals we lose. You see the happy updates, the milestones, the releases, and the babies growing stronger. Those are the moments we celebrate and the moments that keep us going.
But there are losses too.
And those losses take a toll on us.
We can provide warmth. We can provide medication, nutrition, supportive care, and a safe environment. We can fight for them and give them every reasonable chance we can.
But sometimes, there simply isn’t enough we can do.
That doesn’t mean the rescue wasn’t worth it.
It doesn’t mean we failed.
And it certainly doesn’t mean that Ember’s life didn’t matter.
Every animal deserves the chance.
Ember deserved that chance, and because of this community, she got one.
We wish the outcome had been different. We wish all four babies had made it.
But this morning, two little squirrels are still here, and we will continue fighting for them. 🧡
And Ember will be remembered as more than a loss. She was a tiny life that mattered.
Rest peacefully, little Ember. 🐿️🌈
